Ohio high school football playoffs Division VII roundup: Convoy Crestview, Edon, Arlington among winners in first round (10/27/2023)

The first round of the OHSAA football playoffs kicked off on Friday; here are the results in Division VII

The Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs began Friday night with 448 teams vying for a state championship across seven divisions, with 64 teams in each divisions broken into 16 teams per region.

In Division VII, only 10 of the 16 top four seeds in each region - Dalton, Danville, Berlin Center Western Reserve, Hopewell-Loudon, Reedsville Eastern, Beaver Eastern, Caldwell, Fairfield Christian AcademyMarion Local, and Ansonia won and will advance to the next round with home wins and will host again in the second round. 

Meanwhile, No. 13 St. Paul defeated No. 4 Toronto in Region 25 and No. 14 St. Henry defeated No. 3 DeGraff Riverside and No. 13 New Bremen defeated No. 4 Cincinnati College Prep in Region 28. 

And in Region 26, three of the top four seeds went down, as No. 15 Crestview defeated No. 2 Calvert, No. 14 Edon defeated No. 3 Waynesfield-Goshen and No. 13 Arlington took down No. 4 Antwerp.

First round games of note:

Crestview 42, Calvert 14

Crestview, the No. 15 seed in Region 26, scored the first 20 points of the game and never looked back in pulling off the upset.

Quarterback Bryson Penix scored the first touchdown of the game with a 2-yard run and then threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0.

Braxton Leeth scored two ruching touchdowns for Crestview in the win.

Edon 34, Waynesfield-Goshen 27

Quarterback Kyler Sapp broke a 27-27 tie with just three seconds left in the game when he took a shotgun snap and maneuvered his way through the middle for a 5-yard touchdown run.

Edon, the No. 14 seed in Region 26, led 27-13 with just over eight minutes left before Waynesfield-Goshen scored twice to tie the game and set up the last-second theatrics.

Arlington 27, Antwerp 20

Arlington, the No. 13 seed in Region 26, needed to recover an onside kick late to hold on in a game that featured 35 points in the fourth quarter.

Arlington scored twice in the fourth quarter to take a 20-6 lead, but Antwerp made it 20-12 with 3:45 left and then Arlington answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Trenton Heacock to Luke Metzger just over a minute later.

Antwerp scored again with 53 seconds to play, but Arlingotn recovered the onside kick to seal the win.
