Mount Airy uses dominant defense to repeat as North Carolina 1-A football state champions

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA – Mount Airy utilized a suffocating defense and surging offense in the second half to throttle Tarboro 21-3 for the 1-A state championship on Saturday in Chapel Hill.

The Granite Bears (16-0) won their second straight state title, beating Tarboro both times.

Tyler Mason ran 12 yards for a touchdown and Mario Revels raced 89 yards for another score as Mount Airy erased a 3-0 halftime deficit. Quarterback Ian Gallimore threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Blake Hawks late in the fourth quarter.

Tarboro (13-1) got a 39-yard field goal by Oscar Perez Gaspar in the second quarter.
