Providence Day (North Carolina) thumps previously undefeated Cannon
CONCORD, NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina’s top-ranked team according to SBLive Sports figured to get a test from an unbeaten Cabarrus Cannon squad when Providence Day went on the road Friday night, protecting a perfect record of their own.
After a competitive first quarter, Providence Day turned a 7-0 lead into a 28-0 advantage by the half, with three second quarter touchdowns, on their way to a 49-7 victory.
Ian Cline put the Chargers on the board with a 25-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. Quarterback Jadyn Davis, a Michigan commit, tossed two second quarter TD passes, one for 48 yards to Jordan Shipp and one to Channing Goodwin for 38 yards, while Brody Barnhardt added a 31-yard scoring run.
Providence Day engaged the running clock with an 86-yard touchdown run by Cline, in the first minute of the third quarter and went up 42-0 on Davis third touchdown pass of the night, a 3-yard flip to Jaylen Himes.
Cabarrus Cannon avoided the shutout, late in the third quarter, when Colin Reese hauled in a 25-yard pass from Landon Mare, to make the score 42-7, but it was too little too late. Providence Day capped the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run by Zaid Lott.
