Here are the candidates for SBLive’s North Carolina High School Athlete of the Week for Aug. 28-Sept. 2 as nominated by fans, readers and SBLive’s staff. Read through the nominees and cast your vote in our poll. Voting will conclude on Saturday, September 9 at 11:59 p.m. and the winner will be announced in next week's poll. Congratulations to last week's winner, Paul Widerman of Reidsville. Widerman received 6,501 votes, which was 57 percent of the votes cast. Caman Chaplin of West Forsyth was second in the voting.

THIS WEEK’S NORTH CAROLINA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOMINEES

Chandler Welsh, R.J. Reynolds cross country: Welsh won her second straight Norman Trzaskoma Invitational Championship, the city-county meet for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools on August 30 and broke her own meet record in the process. She finished in 11 minutes, 16.34 seconds.

Lane Albright, Mount Tabor football: Albright accounted for five touchdowns (four passing and one rushing) in a 40-6 win against Greensboro Page on August 31. Albright threw for 200 yards in helping the Spartans improve to 2-1 heading into conference play.

Nolan Hauser, Hough football: Hauser, who has committed to play at Clemson, not only kicked the game-winning field goal in a 20-17 win against Dutch Fork, the reigning 5A South Carolina state champions, on Sept. 1, it also tied the national high school record for career field goals at 56. 

Laynie Smith, Chapel Hill volleyball: Smith, who has committed to Illinois, has 119 kills, 13 aces, 11 blocks and 11 digs in helping lead the Tigers to a 6-0 record.

Amareon Blue, Jordan football: Blue finished with 216 rushing yards and  five touchdowns in a 45-7 win against Heritage on Sept. 1. He now has 712 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns through the first three games.

Andrew Attmore II, Dudley: Attmore has the Panthers rolling with a 3-0 record and averaging more than 50 points per game after their 54-8 win at Hillside Sept. 1. Through the first two games of the season, Attmore threw for 626 yards and eight touchdowns.

Drew Waller, West Cabarrus soccer: Waller has scored 17 goals and has six assists for the Wolverines, which has won their first eight games of the season.

Brynna Boyer, Reagan volleyball: Boyer, a junior libero for the Raiders, had 10 aces and 18 digs in wins against East Forsyth and Glenn on Aug. 29 and Aug. 31, respectively. She leads the 7-0 Raiders with 18 aces and 84 digs.
