Freshman Pennson Badgett wins NCHSAA 2-A boys state golf championship; East Surry captures second straight team championship

SOUTHERN PINES, NORTH CAROLINA—Freshman Pennson Badgett of East Surry overcame a three-shot deficit to win the NCHSAA 2-A boys state golf championship on Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Family Club.

Badgett fired a 1-under 71 in Tuesday’s final round, following up a 3-under 69 in Monday’s opening round to beat East Surry teammate Connor Key, Holden Rucker of Farmville Central and Nate O’Neal of Beddingfield by one shot.

Badgett and Key led East Surry to its second straight team championship, as the Cardinals ran away to win by 44 shots over runner up Seaforth.

Anderson Badgett and Jace Goldbach finished T-15 and T-17 as all four East Surry players finished in the top-20.

Key held the lead after the opening round on Monday with a 6-under round of 66, but struggled with a 3-over 75 in the second round.
