Palmyra-Macedon captured the New York Section V Class B1 baseball championship in unusual fashion on Saturday.

Hornell was clinging to a 5-4 lead with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Palmyra-Macedon had runners on second and third. The Red Raiders’ season appeared to come to an end on a called third strike, but the ball was in the dirt, requiring a tag or force out at first base. Brady Prebalick, the Palmyra-Macedon batter, alertly sprinted to first before a tag was applied as Hornell began to celebrate on the field.

Amid the confusion, both runners crossed home plate to give Palmyra-Macedon a 6-5 victory. Brennan Pipitone scored the tying run and Will Caffyn added the winning run for the Red Raiders.

If the play sounds confusing, you’re not alone. At one point, the play-by-play announcer said “I’m not sure what’s going on here.” He later added, “this has gotta be the most bizarre ending I’ve ever seen.”
