Bishop Gorman beats Liberty in Nevada football state championship game
Bishop Gorman is one step closer to a high school football national championship.
The Gaels beat Liberty 56-11 on Tuesday night in the Class 5A Division I Nevada (NIAA) high school football state championship game to cap an unbeaten season. It's the second consecutive state title for Bishop Gorman.
Bishop Gorman (12-0) came into the game as the No. 1 team in the nation in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25 football rankings. The No. 2 team in the country, St. John Bosco (California), faces No. 5 Mater Dei on Friday in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship game. If the Braves beat Mater Dei for a second time this season, they could make a case for leapfrogging Bishop Gorman.
Bishop Gorman quarterback Micah Alejado threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Gaels. A Hawaii commit, Alejado finished the season without throwing an interception.
Tight end Elija Lofton, a Miami commit, caught touchdown passes of 82 and 38 yards, and added a one-yard TD run.
It's the 20th Nevada state football title for Bishop Gorman. They have won 13 of the last 14 state titles in the NIAA's top classification.
