Shooting ends Milwaukee high school football game early, cancels homecoming dance
A shooting sent players and fans running off the field Friday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, ending a high school football game early but causing no injuries.
Pius XI was leading Milwaukee Lutheran 37-14 just as the fourth quarter was about to start when gunshots could be heard on Milwaukee Lutheran's YouTube broadcast of the game. The video has been removed from the site, but several media outlets captured the events:
FOX6 News Milwaukee received a statement sent to Milwaukee Lutheran parents and students after the game:
"Earlier this Friday evening at the home football game, an incident occurred involving an active shooter, who fired multiple shots outside of the track at the football game. The active shooter fled the scene and the identity is not known at this time. The Milwaukee Police Department, who had previously already been present at the game, sent additional officers and squads as a response. We are not aware of any injuries as a result of the gunshots. An investigation is underway. The Milwaukee Police Department is actively managing this situation. Students who attended the game as spectators were released to their parents as the Milwaukee Police Department directed."
The statement went on to say that all Saturday and Sunday athletic events at Milwaukee Lutheran would be canceled, including the homecoming dance, and that virtual school is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 25.
As of Saturday morning, police reported that no one was in custody from the shooting.
