Photos: Marquette tops Eureka for Class 5 District 2 softball championship
CEDAR HILL – The Marquette softball team entered the Class 5 District 2 tournament with a three-game win streak after impressive victories against a trio of 20-win teams in Lindbergh, Rockwood Summit and Hillsboro.
The Mustangs are still streaking after three more wins and a district title.
After defeating rival Lafayette (Wildwood) in nine innings in the district semifinal, second-seeded Marquette beat No. 1 seed Eureka 6-4 in the Class 5 District 2 championship game on Friday at Northwest-Cedar Hill.
Grace Bonczek and Natalie Cox paced the Mustangs' offensive attack with two doubles and two RBIs apiece. Aubrey Watson added two hits, including a double. Hailey Neuner and Natalie Danner each scored two runs.
Maddie Carney earned her 11th win of the season in the circle after scattering four runs (one earned) and eight hits over seven innings.
Marquette (19-9) advances to face Lindbergh (21-9) in the Class 5 quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Mustangs have won nine straight meetings against Lindbergh dating back to the 2015 season.
Eureka (21-6) had a five-game win streak snapped with the loss to Marquette. The Wildcats were seeking their first district championship since 2015.
