New Site advances to MHSAA 2A girls basketball championship with 60-47 win over Bay Springs

Chloe Chism, Brooklyn Hodum combine for 30 points to lift the Royals to another championship berth

The New Site Royals are moving on to the MHSAA Class 2A Girls Basketball Championship after a tight, 60-47 win over Bay Springs Tuesday morning at the Mississippi Coliseum.

The Royals (24-5) will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Ingomar and Heidelberg with a golden ball on the line at 2 p.m. Thursday.

No matter who they draw, coach Myron Sparks’ squad unlikely to face the kind of physicality Bay Springs tested them with Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs the Royals close for most of the morning, and trailed by just one point late in the third quarter before New Site started to pull away late.

Chloe Chism and Brooklyn Hokum both had 15 points for the Royals, and Kayleigh Knight chipped in 13.

But it was Jillian Bullock who made the biggest contribution defensively. The Junior forward helped slow down Akiya Ratcliff, Bay Springs’ big inside presence who finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

“We needed to get bigger inside,” Sparks said. “She came in and played well for us and rebounded. She didn’t play hardly at all in our last game (a 66-63 win over Calhoun City), but she sat there and waited her turn. I told her she was probably the difference in this game for us.”
