The Booneville Blue Devils snagged the top spot in this week's statewide rankings

After dominating Baldwyn and New Site in the Prentiss County Tournament, the Booneville Blue Devils (17-2) vaulted to the top of this week’s Mississippi boys basketball computer rankings.

The defending Class 3A State Champions snatched victories in both of their tournament, winning by margins of 12 and 18 points to run their streak to six wins since a 57-48 loss to DeSoto Central back on Dec. 15.

The Madison Central Jaguars (14-6) topped the boys Class 7A rankings, while the Pascagoula Panthers (18-1) topped the boys Class 6A rankings.

Last week’s No. 1 team, the Jackson Academy Raiders (21-1), remains the top-ranked private school team.

SBLive’s computer rankings formula was created using its own linear algebra-based ranking algorithm inspired by the Colley Bias-Free Ranking Method. Colley’s Method was created by Wes Coley, Ph.D., an astrophysicist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He devised his algorithm in order to help address the subjectivity and controversy regarding BCS college football selections in the 1990s and early 2000s, using a method that used no subjective variables.
