Mississippi high school boys basketball computer rankings (1/4/2024)

Pascagoula tops SBLive's first computer rankings of the 2023-24 boys basketball season

With the holiday tournaments over and league play beginning around the state, it’s time to release SBLive’s first computer rankings of the 2023-24 Mississippi high school boys basketball season.

Pascagoula (15-1) snagged the top spot in the initial statewide computer rankings. The Panthers are riding a15-game heater and are 10-1 against teams ranked in the top 100 in the state.

Biloxi (13-4) is the top-ranked team in the Class 7A rankings, while Yazoo City (15-2) earned the top spot in the Class 5A rankings.

SBLive’s computer rankings formula was created using its own linear algebra-based ranking algorithm inspired by the Colley Bias-Free Ranking Method. Colley’s Method was created by Wes Coley, Ph.D., an astrophysicist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He devised his algorithm in order to help address the subjectivity and controversy regarding BCS college football selections in the 1990s and early 2000s, using a method that used no subjective variables.
