Mississippi high school football schedule this week (9/22/2023)
The 2023 Mississippi high school football season continues this week with Week 5 action kicking off Thursday and continuing through Friday night.
There are only three games slated for Thursday, but one of them features the top-ranked team in the latest Mississippi high school football rankings.
No. 1 Oak Grove faced its biggest test of the season so far last Friday when the Warriors barely held on for a thrilling 45-44 win against visiting Madison-Ridgeland.
They will face one more non-region test this week as they welcome Laurel to Hattiesburg before beginning league play next week.
As usual, Friday will be the primary night of action with more than 140 games slated for that evening, including the must-see game of the week that has a pair of Top 10 teams going head-to-head
In one of the best matchups of the season so far, the No. 5 Picayune Maroon Tide will host the No. 6 Ocean Springs Greyhounds in each teams' final non-region game of the season.
With both teams in different classes, this is not a matchup fans have a chance to see very often.
The Greyhounds might be used to playing fellow Class 7A teams, but the Maroon Tide are the top-ranked team in Class 6A and have a chance to make a statement at home this week when they take on an Ocean Springs squad that lost just one game a season ago.
This matchup could be one of the best games of the year, so you might want to go ahead and buy your tickets now.
