FLOWOOD — The Mississippi Gulf Coast is two trophies richer after the D'Iberville boys and Hancock County girls captured state championships Wednesday afternoon at Fannin Lanes bowling alley at the reservoir.

D'Iberville's finished second overall in points after three games, but swept three games in the best-of-five Baker Series to win the championship.

"Bowling is about two things," D'Iberville coach Johnny Cobb said. "Technique and execution. I've got a group of kids who worked hard on the technique and then came out here today and executed."

The championship was the third in four years for D'Iberville.

On the girls' side, D'Iberville led in overall points after the first three games in the opening round, but Hancock shook off the second-place finish to win the first two games of the best-of-five Baker series, then closed it out with a win in game four. It was the Lady Hawks' third-straight Class III State Championship.

"We've got a great tradition of bowling at Hancock and I think a lot of that has to do with this group of girls we have this year," Hancock coach Trevin Burge said. "We've got one senior and one junior who is graduating early, so we might be able to make it four in a row next year."
