Cullen Nelson, Chanhassen
Kicking off your season versus the defending Class 5A champions is a tall order for any squad, but Nelson's Storm were up for the task. Chanhassen erased a 7-point deficit in the fourth quarter to snap Elk River's win streak at 13 dating back to last season.
Tom Develice, Andover
The Huskies opened their season against a preseason top-10 St. Thomas Academy squad that finished with an impressive 10-1 record last season.
It was Andover, though, who would use a huge 28-point second quarter to breeze past the Cadets 55-29.
Brian Vossen, Lakeville North
Vossen and the Panthers had revenge on their minds as Stillwater sent Lakeville North home last season in blowout fashion 42-7.
The Panthers returned the favor in the season opener as they thrashed the Ponies 35-17, highlighted by a much improved defense that held the Ponies offense in check.
Jason Freed, Brainerd
Freed and the Warriors made arguably the biggest statement of the week as they defeated a Mahtomedi team that won ten games last year.
Freed, who is also the team defensive coordinator, helped stifle the Zephyrs offense as they were held to just six points.
Mark Esch, Minnetonka
On paper, White Bear Lake and Minnetonka seemed to be evenly matched as both teams finished slightly above .500 a year ago.
It took about one half for Esch and company to prove that notion wrong as the Skippers took a 38-0 lead into half en route to a dominant 38-7 win.
Ryan Galindo, Minneapolis Washburn
In perhaps the biggest upset of the week, Minneapolis Washburn went on the road and defeated St Paul Harding, a squad that finished 7-1 last season.
With the game tied at 13 in the fourth quarter, Galindo pulled the right strings as the Millers rattled off 17 unanswered points to defeat the Knights, 30-13.
Kevin Feeney, Moorhead
The Spuds started to play its best football at the end of last season, and they rode that momentum into Thursday's matchup versus Spring Lake Park.
Moorhead would use a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Panthers and started its season off with a big win.
Scott Jackson, Wayzata (volleyball)
The Trojans came into this season as the preseason favorites, and so far everything has gone according to plan for Jackson’s squad. Wayzata has gone up against two top ten teams in state and has yet to drop a set, defeating both Rogers and Burnsville in quick succession.
Aaron Percy, Minneapolis Washburn (boys soccer)
It's good to be a Miller in the year 2023 as both the football and soccer team has got off to blazing hot starts. On the pitch, It's Percy’s squad who's coming off a perfect 2-0 week highlighted by a 4-0 drubbing of East Ridge.
Percy’s defensive tactics seem to be working beautifully as the Millers have yet to allow a goal this season, outsourcing opponents by a combined 18-0.
Pat Malicki, Woodbury (girls soccer)
In what is going to be a tough first month of the season, Malicki and his squad held serve in week one. The Royals went 3-0 in the first week with big wins against Mahtomedi and Andover.
