Mount St. Joe tightens its grip on first in BCL
Mount St. Joseph tightened its grip on first place, while Calvert Hall picked up a big road victory in Baltimore Catholic League action on Monday.
In Irvington, Mount St. Joseph rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat St. Maria Goretti, 60-51. The victory kept MSJ two games up in the loss column ahead of second place St. Frances. It extended Mount St. Joseph’s home win streak to 34 consecutive games.
Tyonne Farrell led MSJ with 23 points, while Jordan Braithwaite added 18. Caleb Embeya and Cole Trn each scored 13 points for Goretti, which fell a half-game behind Mount Carmel for third place.
In Bel Air, Calvert Hall came back from five points down after three quarters to overtake John Carroll, 61-53. The victory was the fifth straight for the Cardinals, their first BCL road win and it pulled them into a sixth place tie with rival Loyola.
Brendan Johnson led the Hall with 41 points. Caden Chinnia-Falline paced the Patriots with 13 points.
In MIAA games, Archbishop Spalding defeated McDonogh, 63-51, while Loyola beat Boys’ Latin, 74-61.
There are three BCL games Wednesday with St. Frances at Calvert Hall, Mount Carmel at John Carroll and Archbishop Spalding at Loyola. Mount St. Joseph will host McDonogh in a MIAA game.The BCL’s non-conference record is 100-38 (.725). Last season, the BCL posted a 105-40 (.724) record vs. non-BCL opponents.
