Mount St. Joseph tops Goretti in Hagerstown
HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND – Two of the Baltimore Catholic League's top three teams tangled in Hagerstown in a battle of the Gaels, Tuesday evening, and Mount St. Joseph outlasted St. Maria Goretti, 63-55, to climb back into a tie for first place with St. Frances at 8-1.
MSJ (24-3 overall) jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the opening quarter and held a 38-23 halftime lead. The Irvington Gaels pushed the advantage to 50-37 after three quarters, but Goretti’s 18-13 fourth-quarter rally fell short.
Jordan Brathwaite led MSJ in scoring with 19 points, while Tyonne Farrell added 15. Caleb Embeya led Goretti with 26 points, and Jarvis Wright chipped in 16.

Wednesday, St. Maria Goretti (13-11 overall) is back in action at home in the Gael Center as Mount Carmel visits in another key BCL game. The Gaels are only one game ahead of the Cougars for third place in the loss column. Goretti won, 70-68, in overtime back, in the first meeting between the teams, on January 5 in Essex. This will be the first of four consecutive BCL road games for Mount Carmel to finish the regular season.
Also on Wednesday, Archbishop Spalding visits St. Frances in another important BCL game. The Panthers will look to retake sole possession of first place, while the visiting Cavaliers trail Mount Carmel by one game in the loss column for fourth. The game is the first of five straight road BCL tilts for Spalding to close the schedule.
Three other MIAA games are on the schedule Wednesday as Calvert Hall hosts McDonogh, John Carroll hosts Glenelg Country School and St. Joe is at Gilman.
Thursday, one game is set as Mount Carmel visits McDonogh in MIAA action.The BCL’s non-conference record is 92-34 (.730). Last season, the BCL posted a 105-40 (.725) record vs. non-BCL opponents.
