We are just past the mid-point part of the high school football season here in Maryland and there’s no shortage of underclassmen performing at a high level. It’s no surprise that freshmen are showing out in Old Line State as that’s been the case in the past many times over. This list of underclassmen features some of the top freshmen football players we’ve seen or have been on the rise in Maryland. Take a look at our list and vote for who you feel has been the top performing freshman high school football player in Maryland.

Jack Sabol, QB, Our Lady of Mount Carmel: The quarterback has completed 45-of-79 passes for 588 yards and five touchdowns this season. 

Joseph Johnson, DL, Snow Hill: The defensive lineman leads all freshmen in the tackles category. Johnson has tallied 46 tackles, two for loss and two sacks.

Carson Bender, RB, Fort Hill: When it comes to moving the chains, Bender has done a splendid job as a freshman. The running back has rushed for 347 yards and scored four times. 

Jordan Jones, RB, Perryville: Jones is going to be a name to remember. The running back has rushed for 361 yards on 36 attempts and scored five touchdowns. Also has made 29 tackles on the defensive side. 

Jadereon Thompson, WR, Queen Annes County: When it comes to freshman wideouts, Thompson stands out this fall. Thompson has caught 15 passes for 260 yards and two scores. 

Darnell Burrus, LB, Carver Vo Tech: Burrus has been a menace to many team's opposing backfields. The linebacker has made 44 tackles, 10 for loss and notched five sacks. 

Stephan Mason, DB, Oxon Hill: Mason has been really good in coming down in run support for Oxon Hill as a freshman, tallying 24 tackles out of the secondary. 

Blake Griffith, DE, Boys Latin: The defensive end has wreaked havoc this 2023 campaign as Griffith has tallied 28 tackles.
