Vote: Who is the 2023 Maine Football Player of the Year?

We give you six candidates to choose from

The high school football season is beginning to wrap up across the country and we start to take a closer look at player of the year awards.

But first, we want to let the fans decide on who they believe are the players most deserving before we here at SBLive Sports start naming the top performers of the 2023 season.

We start off in New England in the great northeastern state of Maine and we ask the question: Who was the 2023 Maine Football Player of the Year?

This list consists of six worthy candidates and we're asking for your help as the fan to vote on who you believe had the best season this fall.

Voting will end on December 31st, 2023.

Editor’s note: Our corresponding poll is intended to be fun, and we do not set limits on how many times a fan can vote during the competition. This poll is specifically for fans to vote on the players that have been nominated and in no way discredits any other player that may not be mentioned in our poll.

Here are the nominations:

Noah Carpenter, QB/SS, Leavitt: Carpenter helped lead Leavitt to a state championship and put up some huge numbers along the way. The senior signal caller completed 90-of-142 passes for 1,801 yards, 21 touchdowns. On the ground, Carpenter rushed for 1,351 yards on 121 carries and scored 23 touchdowns. Carpenter also played defense and tallied 110 tackles, five interceptions and forced five fumbles.

Jonah Barstow, RB, Kennebunk: It was an impressive season for the Kennebunk running back in 2023. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound back rushed for 1,440 yards, scoring 12 touchdowns. Barstow led Kennebunk to a state championship and four of eight games he played in, he rushed for 200-plus yards. Impressive senior campaign for the tailback.

Cohen Galley, QB, Oceanside: Whether it was through the air or on the ground, Galley kept defenses on their proverbial toes. Galley this past season completed 92-of-156 passes for 1,856 yards, 23 touchdowns through the air. On the ground, Galley rushed for 1,363 yards and scored 24 touchdowns.

Spencer Laurendeau, QB, Mount Desert Island: The Trojans were able to win the 8-man Large North Championship in a 26-6 win over Camden Hills. Large part of that was thanks to a strong performance from Laurendeau on offense and clutch on defense. In the championship game, Laurendeau rushed for 176 yards on 44 attempts and scored four touchdowns. He also had an interception as well.

Jack Brewer, QB, Orono: Not many quarterbacks can boast the kind of numbers Brewer did under center for the Riots. Brewer finished 2023 completing 130-of-191 passes for 2,707 yards, 45 touchdowns and just a mere two interceptions for the state champion Orono Riots. The quarterback also added 95 yards and three scores on the ground.

Terrell Edwards, QB, Bonny Eagle: Edwards was another dual-threat quarterback on this list that put up some huge numbers. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound quarterback threw for 909 yards and 14 touchdowns, but it was on the ground where Edwards did the bulk of his damage. The senior rushed for 1,446 yards and 15 touchdowns.
