Iowa high school wrestling state tournament: Day 1 results, team scores (2/14/2024)

Teams, individuals embark on title quests

The top wrestlers in the state invaded Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Wednesday for the opening sessions of the Iowa state wrestling championships.

All three classifications were in action, as some dreams were allowed to continue while others were shattered.

Wrestling continues through Saturday when the next wave of champions will be crowned.

Here is a recap from each class from Wednesday. SBLive will also be providing live updates throughout each day.

3A: Rams race out to front of pack

As expected, Southeast Polk had a field day to begin state, recording 58 points with 10 wrestlers still alive on the championship side.

Ankeny Centennial holds a slim lead over Bettendorf for second followed by Fort Dodge.

Nico DeSalvo, Mat Prine, Carter Pearson, Maximus Riggins, Wil Oberbroeckling, Logan Trenary, Abe Buschong, Brent Slade, Holden Hansen and Cooper Martinson all scored wins with eight of them coming by fall.

For Centennial, Cale Vandermark, Cody Vandermark, Tyler Brennan, Maximus Dhabolt, Lucas Bruhl, Isaac Bruhl, Ari Ehlts and MItchell Grider moved into the quarterfinals. With Jaguars had eight wins come with bonus points.

Led by a major decision from Jake Knight, Bettendorf rebounded from a rough start. The Bulldogs kept six alive on the day. Fort Dodge saw defending state champion Dreshaun Ross take care of business with a 30-second fall, as Dru Ayala, Kane Butrick, Koy Davidson, Damarion Ross and Luke Fierke joined him with second round victories.

Maximus Magayna, who won three titles competing for Waterloo Columbus, picked up a 54-second fall in his first 3A tourney for Waterloo East. Magayna is looking to join the elusive list of four-time state champions.

Another three-timer, Carter Freeman of Waukee Northwest, handled his second round opponent in just 29 seconds to advance into the quarters. His teammate, Koufax Christensen, is seeking a third state title in four years.

2A: Tight battle at the top

Burlington Notre Dame took advantage of each opportunity presented to the Nikes, recording 36.5 points to secure the overnight lead after day one action. Last year, they placed second overall in the team race.

Mount Vernon, third a season ago, is right behind with 33 followed by defending champion Osage and Glenwood.

While many of the top wrestlers received byes through the first round, these four teams were able to gobble up as many bonus points as they could once they did hit the mats.

Six of Burlington Notre Dame’s seven qualifiers made it through the second round on the championship side including Colt Boyles, Carter West, CJ Davis and Kaiden Dietzenbach. The quartet recorded three falls and a technical fall in their four matches.

Led by unbeaten Klayton Perreault, Mount Vernon secured five in the quarterfinals, while Osage matched them with five keeping title hopes alive.

Creston, which had the most qualifiers at 11, went 7-9 over the two rounds.

Jace Hedeman, a junior with two state titles already on his resume, needed just 40 seconds to move on. The Union LaPorte City standout has lost just once in three years.

1A: Don Bosco takes charge

Reigning 1A champion Don Bosco had a great first round, jumping out to the team lead with 50.5 points.

Wilton sits second followed by Alburnett, Jesup and Underwood.

Hayden Schwab, Jaxson Larson, Dawson Youngblut, Ethan Christoffer, Kyler Knaack, Kaiden Knaack, Landon Fernandez and Kyler Sallis all moved into the quarterfinals. Sallis picked up a thrilling 16-14 decision at heavyweight to earn his spot while Christoffer, Kyler Knaack and Kaiden Knaack had pins.

Don Bosco, who earlier this year won state duals, has captured each of the past five traditional team titles.

Alburnett has six alive on the championship side, led by 50-match winner Rowdy Neighbor. Jesup and Underwood each advanced four into the quarters.
