Illinois boys basketball state championships updates

CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS – We are back at State Farm Center for Day 2 of the 2024 Illinois boys basketball championships – semifinal day for Class 3A and 4A.

We will have updates from all three days of the IHSA boys basketball state finals that culminate with four state champions being crowned on Saturday.

ILLINOIS BOYS BASKETBALL FINALS SCHEDULE

Friday, March 8

3A semifinal: Mount Carmel 65, Mt. Zion 49

3A semifinal: DePaul Prep 52, Richwoods 41

4A semifinal: Normal 58, Palatine 38

4A semifinal: Homewood-Flossmoor 40, New Trier 35

3A third-place game: Mt. Zion vs. Richwood, 6:30 PM CT

4A third-place game: Palatine vs. New Trier, 8:15 PM CT

Class 3A semifinals

Mount Carmel 65, Mt. Zion 49

Mount Carmel (32-5) used a balanced scoring attack to pull away in the second half. 

Grant Best and Cameron Thomas each scored 14 points, while Northwestern signee Angelo Ciaravino scored 13 and Noah Mister added 10. 

Tied at halftime, the Caravan outscored Mt. Zion 20-10 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth to pull away for the win. 

Mt. Zion 6-foot-7 sophomore forward JC Anderson scored 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting in 12 minutes in the first half but finished with 17 points. Lyncoln Koester added 13 points for Mt. Zion (35-2). 

DePaul Prep 52, Richwoods 41 

Makai Kvamme and PJ Chambers scored 15 points apiece for DePaul Prep (34-2), who will play for the Class 3A championship on Saturday after winning the 2A title a year ago. Rashaun Porter added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Rutgers 6-10 signee Lathan Sommerville led Richwoods (29-5) with 18 points and three blocked shots. DaQuan Little scored 10 points.

Class 4A semifinals

Normal 58, Palatine 38

Wright State signee Jaheem Webber had 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots and three assists and Braylon Roman had a game-high 19 points as Normal (32-5) beat Palatine to advance to Saturday's 4A title game. 

Connor May led Palatine (28-9) with a team-high 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Tommy Elter added 10 points.

Homewood-Flossmoor 40, New Trier 35

Junior guard Bryce Heard scored a game-high 16 points and senior guard Gianni Cobb added 12 as Homewood-Flossmoor (32-4) used a strong fourth quarter to secure a spot in the 4A championship game on Saturday. 

Sophomore guard Christopher Kirkpatrick led New Trier (29-8) with 13 points, including nine in the first half.

Tied 11-11 at halftime, New Trier took a 26-23 lead into the final quarter but Homewood-Flossmoor outscored the Trevians 17-9 in the final frame. The Vikings made 10 of 12 free throw attempts in the final quarter to pull out the victory.
