Antioch's Jacey Schuler voted SBLive's Illinois High School Athlete of the Week (June 5-11)

Michigan State recruit struck out 10 in 11 2/3 innings in Illinois 3A softball title game

Congratulations to Antioch softball's Jacey Schuler, who was voted the SBLive Illinois high school Athlete of the Week for June 5-11. She received more than 77 percent of the votes.

In a pitchers' duel that went into extra innings in Antioch’s 3A title game matchup with Lemont, Schuler had a dominant pitching performance. The Michigan State recruit went 11 ⅔ innings, with 10 strikeouts and an earned run, but Lemont was able to escape with a 1-0 victory.

Grayslake Central baseball player Will Schufreider finished second in the voting with more than 15 percent of the votes.

Joe Chiarodo, Edwardsville baseball

Chiarodo was tough on the mound during the Tigers' 3A semifinal game against York on Friday. The University of Alabama commit pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one earned run and striking out eight. In two straight innings, he left York runners on base with rally-thwarting strikeouts. Edwardsville won 7-3 and advanced to the 4A title game before repeating as state champs.

Isabel Cunnea, Marist softball

Cunnea made history during Marist’s Class 4A semifinal game against Barrington on Friday. The senior outfielder hit her record-setting 23rd home run of the season and helped the RedHawks roll to a 10-0 victory to secure a spot in the state championship.

Gianna Cunningham, Benet Academy softball

Cunningham starred both at the plate and in the circle during Benet’s Class 3A third place game on Saturday. The freshman pitched a scoreless inning in relief in the top of the eighth, and in the bottom of the eighth she walked it off with a bases-loaded single to secure Benet’s third-place finish (tied for the best finish in program history).

Eileen Donahue, Marist softball

A first baseman, Donahue helped the RedHawks to their second 4A championship in three seasons with a solid performance at the plate on Saturday. The senior University of Illinois recruit had two hits and drove in two runs to lead her squad to a 9-1 victory.

John Hughes, Nazareth Academy baseball

A junior, Hughes had a great performance on the mound for the Roadrunners during their 3A semifinal game against Sycamore on Friday. The North Carolina commit tossed five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out three, to lead the way to a 3-0 victory to advance to the title game.

Kayden Jennings, Edwardsville baseball

Jennings provided a big spark for the Edwardsville offense during the Class 4A semifinal game against York on Friday. The senior University of Illinois-Springfield commit was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Edwardsville to a 7-3 win and their second consecutive state championship appearance.

Jensen Krantz, Yorkville softball

Krantz, a junior first baseman, came through in the clutch during Yorkville’s Class 4A semifinal game against Oak Park-River Forest on Friday. With the game tied with the bases loaded and two outs in the 13th inning Krantz stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off single to send the Foxes to the title game.

Alec Marchetto, Edwardsville baseball

Marchetto had a key performance out of the bullpen during the Tigers' 6-4 victory in the Class 4A title game against Brother Rice on Saturday. The junior allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings and struck out five to pick up the win as the Tigers took home their second consecutive state championship.

Sage Mardjetko, Lemont softball

A South Carolina softball commit, Mardjetko was lights out in the circle to lead Lemont to a victory in the Class 3A title game on Saturday. The senior went the distance in extra innings and threw a 12 inning no-hitter with an astounding 24 strikeouts. She also tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts in the semifinal round.

Josh McDevitt, Effingham baseball

A senior, Effingham was dominant on the mound for the Flaming Hearts in their 3A third-place game against Sycamore. The University of Missouri commit tossed eight shutout innings and struck out 14 but Sycamore escaped with the win in the ninth inning. McDevitt finished his season with just seven earned runs and 140 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched.

Luke Mudd, Grayslake Central baseball

Mudd had a memorable day at the plate during Grayslake Central’s Class 3A semifinal matchup with Effingham on Friday. The senior was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Grayslake Central to a 9-1 victory and a trip to the 3A championship game.

Finn O’Meara, Nazareth Academy baseball

A senior DePauw commit, O’Meara was a big contributor both on the mound and at the plate for the Roadrunners in the Class 3A championship game against Grayslake Central on Saturday. O’Meara was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and he threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to help Nazareth claim their second straight state title.

Will Schufreider, Grayslake Central baseball

Schufreider had a solid start for Grayslake Central against Effingham in the 3A semifinals on Friday. The senior threw 5 2/3 innings (allowing his first hit in the sixth) allowing one earned run and struck out six to help send the Rams to the championship game.

Brendan Stressler, New Trier baseball

Stressler had a huge day at the plate against York during the Class 4A third place game in Joliet on Saturday. The Saint Louis commit went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs to lead the Trevians to a 9-4 victory in extra innings.

Cole Van Assen, Brother Rice baseball

Van Assen had a great performance on the mound during the Crusaders 4A semifinal matchup with New Trier on Friday. The senior Purdue commit tossed a complete game shutout as Brother Rice won 4-0 to move on to the state championship.
