Scores, semifinal updates: Idaho high school girls basketball state tournament 2024
NAMPA, Idaho - The rest of the state somehow forgot.
So the Coeur d’Alene High School girls basketball team reminded them all just who it is Friday night at the Ford Idaho Center.
The defending Class 5A state champions took down favorite Boise 58-55, in the Class 5A semifinals in back-to-back seasons.
The Vikings (19-5) will play crosstown rival Lake City (25-2) in the final at 8 p.m. Saturday right back inside the Ford Idaho Center. The game will be a rematch of the 2007 state championship.
“I think last year we were expected to be in the championship game. (But) riding in this year, I think a lot of people had written us off,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Nicole Symons said. “I think the people that believed that we could get back here were the people in our locker room and we just kept our heads down and kept being who we are.
“I’m a little in disbelief right now.”
But not at the performance of her star player Teagan Colvin.
The UNLV signee once again showed up on the biggest of stages. She dropped a team-high 33 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter and the team’s last eight of the game.
“The bigger the stage, the better she’s going to be,” Symons said. “She always has been. I’ve watched her since fifth grade, and she’s done the same stuff. It’s just in her.”
And the all-state point guard once again proved it.
The Brave (23-2) were up 47-44 with 5:15 remaining. They had just taken their first lead of the game about a minute earlier on a jumper by 5A MVP and reigning Gatorade state player of the year Avery Howell - more on her later. It had erased a 10-point first half lead.
But Colvin wasn’t about to let them complete the comeback win.
She tied the game at 47-47 on a 3-pointer with 3:51 remaining.
Her younger sister Brookslee Colvin drilled a 3-pointer of her own a little more than a minute later as the Vikings retook the lead at 50-49. But it was the Teagan Colvin show from there.
She drained her sixth and final 3-pointer in the corner right in the face of Howell, who was closely guarding her. It broke another tie and gave Coeur d’Alene the lead at 53-50 with 1:45 to go..
Not to be outdone, Howell answered with a 3-pointer herself to tie the game back up at 53-53 just 25 seconds later.
However, Teagan Colvin gave her team the lead for good at 55-53 on a layin with 59.7 seconds remaining. She then hit a free throw with 9.1 seconds left that made it a two-possession game at 57-53 to basically seal it.
“These are my favorite types of games,” Colvin said. ‘The close ones where it’s down to the wire. We have great competition. I love it. I’m here for it.”
She certainly got that from her counterpart Howell.
The USC signee outdueled her on the stat sheet with a game-high 35 points and 12 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. But she missed her last two shots of the game, including one that would have tied the game with 14.3 seconds to go.
Down 56-53 with 26.1 seconds showing on the clock, Colvin gave Boise a gift with a rare miss at the free-throw line. The Brave took their time coming down the floor and Howell got a good look at a 3-pointer at the top of the key coming off a screen.
But it hit the front of the rim and bounced off right into the hands of Colvin, who iced it just seconds later.
Howell finished 12-of-19 from the field and 50% from beyond-the-arc for the game.
“Those are good looks,” Boise girls coach Kim Brydges said. “If you look at her stat line, she knocked down plenty of good looks today. Those are things she hits on a regular basis, and she’ll hit them in college, too.
“I would be happy to put my money on Avery Howell.”
A lot of other people did.
Which was why Coeur d’Alene was kind of cast aside. It was given the fourth seed even after beating second-seed Lake City for the district championship just a week ago.
The Vikings did lose on the road to Boise, 53-43, in the third game of the season in mid-November. They were also beaten twice by Lake City and Rigby, which is why it spent most of the year being in the bottom half of the state media poll.
But none of that mattered Friday.
“It stung a little bit. I’m going to be honest,” Colvin said. “But we’re here to show it. Numbers can say anything. Rankings can say anything. But a team shows it on the court, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
Brookslee Colvin had 18 points as the sisters combined for 51 total points and 11 3-pointers. The siblings also scored all 32 first-half points.
“I didn’t see that at all,” Teagan Colvin said with a laugh. “Tonight was just our night I guess.”
Coeur d’Alene will now try for its 11th state championship and first repeat since 2010.

LAKE CITY 56, RIGBY 53
Sophia Zufelt tallied a game-high 22 points and nearly got a double-double in the process with eight rebounds to lead the Timberwolves (25-2) to their first state championship appearance since 2007 - the year of their last title.
Kaliah Frazey and Kamryn Pickford also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Kambree Barber had a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Trojans (23-2) in the loss. Mylee Graham chipped in with 13 points.

CLASS 4A
SHELLEY 68, LAKELAND 42
Mia Williams racked up 22 points on five 3-pointers as the top-ranked and undefeated Russets (24-0) are heading back to the state championship for the second straight year.
They will play Skyline at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center.
BYU signee Brinley Cannon had 14 points for Shelley, which hasn’t lost since falling in the title game a year ago.
Landree Simon had 17 points for the Hawks (14-10) in the loss. Payton Sterling also reached double figures with 11 points.
SKYLINE 51, POCATELLO 48
Shay Shipped netted a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (19-7), who are heading to the state title game for the second time in three years.
Older sister Kysa Shippen added 10 points in the win.
Abby Lusk notched a double-double herself with 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Thunder (18-6) in the loss.
