Idaho high school football rankings: (10/11/2023)

Meridian back in top three after fifth consecutive win; Hillcrest moves up to No. 5

Each week, SBLive Idaho will update its all-classification top-10 high school football rankings.

Here is the Week 8 list compiled by SBLive Idaho correspondent Brandon Walton:

1. EAGLE (7-0)

Last week: Beat No. 7 Mountain View, 28-14.

This week: Hosts Borah at 7 p.m. Friday.

Mustangs continued their best start in seven years and remained only undefeated team in Class 5A ranks by shutting out the Mavericks in the second half. They’ve only lost once to Borah in past decade.

2. BOISE (6-1)

Last week: Beat Borah, 29-28 (OT).

This week: Hosts Kuna at 7 p.m. Friday.

Brave rebounded from first loss (Eagle) against their crosstown rivals. They’re guaranteed to have just their second winning season in the past 30 years - and first playoff appearance since 2002 is assured, too.

3. MERIDIAN (5-2)

Last week: Beat No. 8 Rocky Mountain, 28-24.

This week: Hosts Capital at 7 p.m. Friday.

Remember when the Warriors were 0-2? It's a distant memory. They've rattled off five consecutive wins, including ones over Highland and Rocky Mountain. They haven’t lost at home in two years.

4. HIGHLAND (6-1)

Last week: Beat Rigby, 22-19.

This week: Hosts Madison at 7 p.m.

Rams knocked off two-time reigning Class 5A champions for the second consecutive year in thrilling fashion. It was their first win over a 5A opponent this season - and one that many needed to see of a team with real title aspirations.

5. HILLCREST (7-0)

Last week: Beat Bonneville, 42-6.

This week: Hosts Shelley at 7 p.m. Friday.

Knights moved into top five for the first time this season. It’s hard to deny what they’re doing right now. Hillcrest has just found a multitude of different way to remain unbeaten for the best start in decades.

6. BISHOP KELLY (7-0)

Last week: Beat Emmett, 42-35.

This week: Hosts Columbia at 7 p.m. Friday.

Knights were really challenged for the first time this season. It was their first game this season where they didn’t win by double figures. But Bishop Kelly found a way to prevail in Emmett for the first time since 2019.

7. MOUNTAIN VIEW (4-3)

Last week: Lost to No. 1 Eagle, 28-14.

This week: Travels to Nampa at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Mavericks are a curiosity. They own wins over two teams on this list, but haven’t won back-to-back games in more than a month. Mountain View is also dealing with an injury to standout QB Justin McGee.

8. ROCKY MOUNTAIN (4-3)

Last week: Lost to No. 3 Meridian, 28-24.

This week: Travels to Timberline at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Grizzlies haven’t had this many losses at this point in a season in 12 years. This is also the first time since 2008 - the year the school opened - that they’ve lost to Meridian, Mountain View and Eagle all in the same season.

9. COEUR D’ALENE (5-2)

Last week: Beat Lake City, 31-7.

This week: Hosts Post Falls at 7 p.m. Friday.’

Vikings have seemingly found their rhythm on both sides of the ball. They piled up 319 yards and held Lake City to just 170 yards last week. It was the fifth time this season Coeur d’Alene has held an opponent to less than 20 points.

10. POCATELLO (3-2)

Last week: Bye.

This week: Hosts Preston at 7 p.m. Friday.

Thunder received a much-needed bye after a grueling month that saw them play Twin Falls, Highland, Hillcrest and Shelley. Now they’ll turn their attention to the 4A South East Idaho Conference where they haven’t lost in three years.
