Royals finish No. 1 in our final 2023 Girls Volleyball National Rankings; Mater Dei (California) is No. 2

Victory was doubly sweet for the Hamilton Southeastern Royals’ (Indiana) volleyball team this year.

On the heels of repeating as Class 4A Indiana state champ and stretching its win streak to an impressive 67 matches, HSE has been crowned as SBLive’s volleyball national champion for the 2023 season.

The Royals, who feature seven Division I commits, only dropped five sets all season. The back-to-back state titles, long win streak and domination of opponents were more than enough to rank them ahead of Mater Dei (Santa Ana, California), which won the CIF Open Division state title, but had two losses this season (43-2).

A good number of HSE’s players compete for national club powers Munciana and Munciana Indy.

“It’s an incredible honor,” said HSE senior outside hitter Lauren Harden, a Florida commit who recently won the Ms. Indiana Volleyball award after the Indiana All-Star match. “This team is a special one and one that will go down in history at HSE, so to see it pay off nationally is so incredibly amazing to see.”

1. Hamilton Southeastern

(Fishers, Indiana) (33-0)

Last week: 1

The Royals earlier this month repeated as Class 4A state champion with a 3-1 victory against Castle (34-4). HSE has won 67 consecutive matches dating to the second match of the 2022-23 season.

2. Mater Dei

(Santa Ana, California) (43-2)

Last week: 2

The Monarchs last week defeated 2022 national champion Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) and Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) by 3-1 scores to win the CIF Open Division state championship. The Monarchs finished the season with a 24-match win streak. Leading MD in the final were Cymarah Gordon, 17 kills and four blocks; Layli Ostovar, 14 kills and 12 digs; Isabel Clark, 13 kills; Julia Kakkis, nine blocks, 15 digs and 39 assists; Emma Kingston, seven blocks; Tessa Hurley, 18 digs; and Malyssa Cawa, 15 digs.

3. Grand Oaks

(Spring, Texas) (50-1)

Last week: 3

The Grizzlies last week battled past Prosper, 3-2, and swept Cinco Ranch (Katy), 3-2, to win the 2023 UIL Texas Volleyball Class 6A state championship at Curtis Culwell Center. They finished with a 24-match winning streak and their first-ever state title. Leading Grand Oaks in the final were Samara Coleman, 13 kills; Halle Thompson, 15 kills and eight digs; Caelyn Emmerling, eight kills; Jonaida Donowa, six blocks and four kills; Audrey Terry and Brooklyn Sheridan, combined 32 assists; and Cali Reece, 12 digs. The Grizzlies were one of the most experienced teams in the nation with 11 seniors.

4. Wayzata

(Plymouth, Minnesota) (34-0)

Last week: 4

The Trojans earlier this month swept Edina, Anoka, and New Prague by 3-0 scores to win their fourth consecutive MSHSL Class AAAA state championship at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. Wayzata is only the second team in Minnesota history to win four straight championships.

5. Divine Savior Holy Angels

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin) (47-1)

Last week: 5

DSHA earlier this month swept River Falls and Hamilton by 3-0 scores and then battled past Oconomowoc (41-4) in five sets to repeat as WIAA Division 1 state champs.

6. Prestonwood Christian Academy

(Plano, Texas) (36-4)

Last week: 6

The Lion beat Concordia Lutheran (Tomball) and Antonian Prep (San Antonio) to repeat as TAPPS Class 6A state champion. They finished the season with a 14-match win streak.

7. Pace Academy

(Atlanta, Georgia) (37-3)

Last week: 8

The Knights earlier this month repeated as Class 4A state champ with a 3-2 victory against Lovett (Atlanta) in a rematch of last year’s final. Pace finished the season with an 18-match win streak.

8. Alpharetta

(Alpharetta, Georgia) (38-3)

Last week: 9

The Raiders peaked at the end by winning five straight, including a victory against Pope, to capture their second state title, first since 2020.

9. Dike-New Hartford

(Dike, Iowa) (50-0)

Last week: 10

The Wolverines earlier this month completed a perfect season by beating Hinton, 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 in the Class 2A state championship game at Xtream Arena in Coralville. It was the team’s third title in four years, and 16^thoverall.

10. Cathedral Catholic

(San Diego, California) (34-5)

Last week: 7

The 2022 national champion Dons last week fell to Mater Dei, 3-1, in the CIF Open Division state semifinals.

11. Assumption

(Louisville, Kentucky) (36-5)

Last week: 12

The Rockets earlier this month beat Notre Dame Academy (Park Hills), 25-19, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20, to win the KHSAA volleyball state championship – their 23^rd state title.

12. Mother McAuley

(Chicago, Illinois) (37-5)

Last week: 13

The Mighty Macs earlier this month beat Barrington, 2-0, and Benet Academy, 2-1, to repeat as IHSA Class 4A state champ. It was the 17^th state title for the powerhouse program.

13. Archbishop Mitty

(San Jose, California) (33-5)

Last week: 14

The Monarchs last week beat defending CIF Open Division runner-up Saint Francis (Mountain View), 3-1, and then lost to Mater Dei in the CIF Open Division state championship match. Archbishop Mitty had its 14-match winning streak snapped.

14. Mira Costa

(Manhattan Beach, California) (39-4)

Last week: 11

The Mustangs earlier this month beat Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), 3-1, and then lost to 2022 national champion Cathedral Catholic, 3-1, in the second round of the 2023 CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships.

15. Flint Hill

(Oakton, Va.) (33-3)

Last week: 15

The Huskies earlier this month repeated as Division I Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state champ by beating Saint Gertrude (Richmond) and Collegiate (Richmond) by 3-0 scores and Bishop O’Connell (Arlington), 3-1. The Huskies also won the Independent School League Division AA tournament.

16. St. Mary’s Dominican

(New Orleans, Louisiana) (44-2)

Last week: Unranked

SMD won its fourth straight state championship, beating Mt. Carmel, 3-1, for the LHSAA Division I title. Leading the way were Camryn Chatellier, 24 kills and 21 digs; Tamia Williams, 18 kills; Zoie Mitchell, 15 kills; Lauren Pipitone, 33 digs; Aurore Tortorich, 25 digs; Maia Briuglio, 17 digs; and Gabby Marcello, 16 digs and 63 assists.

17. Kamehameha Kapalama

(Honolulu, Hawaii) (30-3)

Last week: Unranked

The Warriors toppled Punahou, 3-1, in a battle of Honolulu powers for the HHSAA Division 1 state championship at the BYU-Hawaii George Q. Cannon Activities Center. It was the 24^th state title for the Warriors. Leading the way were Kalaweloilehua Chock, 18 kills; Adrianna Arquette, 17 kills, eight blocks and 19 digs; Tia Kapihe, seven blocks; Ashli Lum, 19 digs; Kalei Watson, 17 digs; and Emma Lilo, 10 digs and 43 assists.

18. Lafayette

(Wildwood, Missouri) (36-2)

Last week: Unranked

The Lancers closed the season with 22 consecutive wins, including a 3-0 sweep of Howell (St. Charles) in the Class 5 state championship game. It marked the second consecutive title and eighth overall for the Missouri power. Leading Lafayette were Maya Witherspoon, 21 kills, three aces and 10 digs; Amelia Moser, 16 digs; Megan Skaggs, 15 digs; Allison Risley, 13 digs; and Alyssa Nelson, 12 digs and 34 assists.

19. Benet Academy

(Lisle, Illinois) (39-3)

Last week: 18

The Redwings earlier this month ousted Willowbrook, 3-1, but then fell to powerful Mother McAuley, 2-1, in the IHSA Class 4A state championship game. It was the second straight year the teams met for the title.

20. O'Connor

(Phoenix, Arizona) (34-1)

Last week: Unranked

The Eagles won their first-ever indoor volleyball title with a 3-1 victory against Perry (Gilbert) in the Class 6A state championship game. They finished the season with a 20-match win streak. Leading the way were Devyn Wiest, 18 kills and 17 digs; Iana Loera, 12 kills, three blocks and 10 digs; Katie Lambeth, 11 kills; Piper Rama, four aces and 18 digs; Kristen Sheehy, three blocks; Kinsley Singleton, 20 digs; Shannon Sheehy, 10 digs and 28 assists; and Addison France, 11 assists.

21. Immaculate Heart Academy

(Washington Township, New Jersey) (29-1)

Last week: 17

The Blue Eagles earlier this month repeated as NJSIAA Non-Public A girls state champ by beating Union Catholic (Scotch Plains), 2-0, and Paul VI (Haddonfield), 2-1, at Franklin Township. It marked the third straight year that IHA and Paul VI met in the Non-Public A final. It is the 17^th state title for the Washington Township parochial school. The Blue Eagles are an impressive 56-2 dating to the 2021 state final.

22. Lake Catholic

(Mentor, Ohio) (29-0)

Last week: 19

The Cougars earlier this month repeated as OHSAA Division III state champs by sweeping St. Henry and Archbishop Nicholas (Cincinnati) by 3-0 scores at Wright State University. Lake Catholic recorded 26 sweeps this season.

23. Valor Christian

(Highlands, Ranch, Colorado) 25-0

Last week: 20

The Eagles earlier this month repeated as 5A state champion by beating Grandview (Aurora), 3-1; Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch), 3-0; and Legend (Parker) and Fossil Ridge (Fort Collins) by 3-2 scores. They extended their win streak to a whopping 58 matches and became only the sixth Colorado team to win consecutive Class 5A titles.

24. Carrollwood Day School

(Tampa, Florida) (31-2)

Last week: 21

The Patriots earlier this month won the Class 3A state championship by beating Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) and Westminster Christian (Miami) by 3-1 scores. They finished the season with a 14-match win streak.

25. Northville

(Northville, Michigan) (48-3)

Last week: 16

The 2022 state runner-up Mustangs last week swept Portage Northern, 3-0, and then fell to Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids), 3-1, in the 2023 Michigan High School Girls Volleyball state semifinals.
