No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern (Indiana) advances to Class 4A state championship game; No. 2 Mater Dei and No. 3 Mira Costa to play Saturday in CIF Division 1 final

Thirty-two down, one to go.

Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers, Indiana) last week moved to within one victory of repeating as Class 4A state champ after beating La Porte, 3-0, in the North Semi-State match.

The Royals (32-0) take on Castle (Newburgh) for the state title on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Ball State University’s Worthen Arena. HSE has won 66 consecutive matches dating to last season, and has dropped only four sets this year.

In California, No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and No. 3 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) will play in the CIF Division I finals on Nov. 4 in one of the biggest matchups of the 2023 season. The winner will stay in contention for a national championship.

1. Hamilton Southeastern

(Fishers, Indiana) (32-0)

The Royals are one win away from repeating as Class 4A state champion after defeating La Porte, 3-0, for the North Semi-State championship. HSE will take on Castle (34-3) on Nov. 4 for the title. Leading the Royals in their latest win were Lauren Harden, 10 kills; Madison Miles, eight kills; Madison Schicker, four aces; Breonna Goss, six blocks; Sophie Ledbetter, five digs; Kaylyn Christy, five digs; Ava Hunter, 17 assists; and Macy Hinshaw, 16 assists.

2. Mater Dei

(Santa Ana, California) (38-2)

Last week: 2

The Monarchs last week defeated Marymount and Sierra Canyon by 3-0 scores to win Pool A in the CIF Division I playoffs. The Santa Ana squad has won 19 consecutive matches and will play No. 3 Mira Costa in the CIF Division 1 Finals on Nov. 4 at Cerritos College. Dan O’Dell coaches Mater Dei. Leading the way for Mater Dei are senior outside hitter Isabel Clark, senior Cymarah Gordon, freshman middle blocker Emma Kingston, senior Libero Malyssa Cawa, senior Libero/defensive specialist Tessa Hurley and senior setter Julia Kakkis.

3. Mira Costa

(Manhattan Beach, California) (39-2)

Last week: 3

The surging Mustangs last week swept Alemany (Mission Hills) and Huntington Beach to win their pool in the 2023 CIF Southern Section Girls Volleyball Championship playoffs. Mira Costa has won 15 straight matches and next plays Mater Dei for the championship on Nov. 4. Mater Dei and Mira Costa are the top two seeded teams. Leading the Mustangs are Charlie Fuerbringer, Audrey Flanagan and Bryn Shankle.

4. Grand Oaks

(Spring, Texas) (43-1)

Last week: 4

The Grizzlies last week extended their winning streak to 17 with 3-0 sweeps of Cleveland (Texas) and Episcopal (Bellaire). They were scheduled to play Nimitz (Houston) in the playoffs on Monday, Oct. 30. Leading the Grizzlies are sophomore outside hitter Halle Thompson, senior middle blocker Jaela Auguste, sophomore defensive specialist Cali Reece, senior setter/defensive specialist Audrey Terry, and junior outside hitter Samara Coleman.

5. Wayzata

(Plymouth, Minnosta) (30-0)

Last week: 5

The three-time defending Class 4A state champ Trojans last swept Park Center (Brooklyn Park) and Hopkins (Minnetonka) in the Section quarterfinals and semifinals. Wayzata takes on Champlin Park on Wednesday, Nov. 1. Leading the way are senior outside hitter Olivia Swenson, junior middle hitter Katie Kelzenburg, senior Libero Bianca Nistor, senior setter Stella Swenson, and senior outside hitter Avery Jesewitz.

6. Papillion-La Vista South

(Papillion, Nebraska) (35-1)

Last week: 6

The two-time defending Class A state champ Titans bounced back from a stunning loss to arch-rival Papillion-La Vista High School in the Metro Conference Tournament semifinals to sweep North Plate and Elkhorn South (Omaha) by 3-0 scores and win the District A-1 championship. It is the 10^thstraight state championships berth for the Titans, who have won three of the last four state titles. Katie Tarman coaches Papio South. The Titans will take on Papillion-La Vista High (24-15) in the 1-vs-8 match on Nov. 1 in Lincoln. Papio South is led by senior outside hitter Lauren Medeck, freshman middle hitter Lyric Judson, sophomore Libero/defensive specialist Kami Dyrstad, senior middle hitter Morgan Bode, and junior setter Charlee Solomon.

7. Divine Savior Holy Angels

(Milwaukee, Wisconsin) (44-1)

Last week: 7

The defending WIAA Division 1 state champ last week defeated Brookfield Central and Menomonee Falls to win the Sectional championship and advance to state. DSAA next plays Burlington (30-10) on Thursday, Nov. 2. DSHA is led by senior outside hitter/right-side hitter Sophia Wendlick, sophomore middle blocker Maddie Brown, junior Libero/Outside Hitter Olivia Durst, and junior setter Jordan Czajkowski.

8. McKinney Boyd

(McKinney, Texas) (30-1)

Last week: 8

The Class 6A-Region 1, District 5 champ Broncos last week stretched their win streak to 20 with a 3-0 victory against Braswell. They play Hebron in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday, Oct. 31. Leading the Broncos are junior outside hitter/Libero Ale Romo, sophomore middle hitter Keira Bose, senior Libero/defensive specialist Kali Vanderhoof, senior setter Carson Eickenloff, and junior setter Sara Quigley.

9. Prestonwood Christian Academy

(Plano, Texas) (33-4)

Last week: 9

The Texas power pushed its win streak to 11 last week, beating Ursuline Academy (Dallas), 3-1, and finishing as TAPPS Class 6A District 1 champs. Senior Camille Edwards recently reached 3,400 career assists. Last year, PCA went 40-1, winning the TAPPS Class 6A state title.

10. Cathedral Catholic

(San Diego, California) (30-4)

Last week: 10

The defending national champion Dons last week defeated Eastlake (Chula Vista), 3-0, in the CIFSD Open Division quarterfinals. CCHS next plays Bishop’s (La Jolla) on Oct. 31. The Dons are led by senior middle blocker Jenna Hanes, junior Libero Maya Evens, senior opposite/outside hitter Ayva Moi, and senior setter Amanda Saeger.

11. Bob Jones

(Madison, Alabama) (52-2)

Last week: 11

The defending Class 7A state runner-up last week beat Oak Mountain (Birmingham), Thompson (Alabaster and Spain Park (Hoover) to win the North Regional Tournament. The Patriots play Auburn High School next on Nov. 1. Leading Bob Jones High are junior outside hitter Kennedy Vaughn, senior middle hitter Eliza Tyrrell, senior Libero/defensive specialist Meg Jarrett, junior setter Riley Lovell, and junior defensive specialist/Libero Kalison Beigh.

12. Pace Academy

(Atlanta, Georgia) (36-3)

Last week: 12

The defending Class 4A state champ Knights last week defeated Starr’s Mill (Fayetteville) and Central (Carrollton) in the 2023 GHSA Volleyball State Championship playoffs. Pace next plays Lovett (Atlanta) on Nov. 4. Leading the Knights are senior right-side hitter/setter Grace Agolli, sophomore outside hitter/middle hitter Lawson Monroe, senior Libero/defensive specialist Dhru Lalaji, sophomore setter Olivia Siskin, and sophomore defensive specialist/Libero Gabby Emch.

13. Hudsonville

(Hudsonville, Michigan) (43-2)

The Eagles stretched their winning streak to 36 matches by beating Caledonia, 3-0, and Grand Haven, 3-1, to win the Red Conference title. Leading the way are senior outside hitter Isabelle Swiercz, senior right-side hitter Maislin Joldersma, junior Lauren Bower, senior Libero Gianna Bender, and senior setter Megan Beemer.

14. Benet Academy

(Lisle, Illinois) (35-2)

Last week: Unranked

One of the top teams in Illinois makes its debut after beating Batavia and Naperville North last week by 2-0 scores. The Redwings were scheduled to play Wheaton-Warrenville on Oct. 30 in a Sectional semifinal. Leading Benet are sophomore middle hitter Lynney Tarnow, junior middle hitter Gabby Stasys, junior Libero/outside hitter Aniya Warren, senior Libero/defensive specialist Christine Pullen, and sophomore setter Ellie Stiernagle.

15. Pope

(Marietta, Georgia) (39-3)

Last week: 16

The defending Class 6A state champ Greyhounds last week swept Marist (Atlanta) and Blessed Trinity (Roswell) by 3-0 scores in the 2023 GHSA Volleyball State Championship playoffs. Pope next takes on Alpharetta in the state championship game on Saturday. Leading Pope are senior outside hitter Fifi Harvey, junior middle hitter/outside hitter Ellis Crawford, senior Libero/defensive specialist Dayla Ortiz, and senior setter Cooper Abney.

16. Immaculate Heart Academy

(Washington Township, New Jersey) (25-1)

The defending NJSIAA Non-Public A girls state champ last week defeated Tenafly. The Blue Eagles next take on Mount St. Mary Academy (Watchung) on Nov. 1. Leading Immaculate are junior outside hitter/opposite Eve Roman, junior middle blocker Rachel Paton, senior middle blocker/opposite Emily Sabino, senior Libero Abby Romero, senior setter Kalena Stavish, and senior setter Bryana Saenz.

17. St. Francis

(Mountain View, California) (32-4)

The Lancers last week defeated Menlo-Atherton, 3-0, in the 2023 CIF Central Coast Section Girls Volleyball Tournament. St. Francis next plays Valley Christian (San Jose) on Nov. 1. Leading the Lancers are senior outside hitter Taylor Williams, senior middle hitter Sacha Touma, sophomore middle hitter Ella Fulton, senior Whitney Wallace, senior outside hitter/defensive specialist Erin Curtis, junior Libero/outside hitter Claire Egan, and senior setter Hannah Maguire. Last season, the Lancers finished as State Open Division runner-up to Cathedral Catholic.

18. Mother McAuley

The defending Class 4A state champ Mighty Macs last week beat Rich Township (Olympia Fields) and Shepard (Palos Heights) by 2-0 scores and then topped Sandburg (Orland Park), 2-0, on Oct. 30. The Macs next play powerful Marist (Chicago) on Nov. 1. Leading the Macs are senior outside hitter Ellie White, a Michigan commit, Ellery Rees, Samantha Falk, Peyton Heatherly, and Olivia Urbon.

19. Flint Hill

(Oakton, Virgina) (27-3)

Last week: 19

The defending Division I Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state champ swept Potomac School (McLean) and Jackson-Reed (Washington, D.C.). The Huskies, ISL-AA regular season champs, were scheduled to play Holton Arms (Bethesda, Md.) in the ISL quarterfinals on Oct. 30. Leading Flint Hill are Mickhaila Murray, Ryla Jones, Evie Huang, and Natalie Nguyen.

20. Dike-New Hartford

(Dike, Iowa) (49-0)

Last week: 20

The defending Class 2A state runner-up Wolverines beat Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center, 3-0. Leading D-NH are senior outside hitters Payton Petersen and Jadyn Petersen, senior middle hitter Maryn Bixby, and Addy Joslin.

21. Lake Catholic

(Mentor, Ohio) (25-0)

The defending OHSAA Division III state champ last week defeated Memorial (Campbell) and Mineral Ridge by 3-0 scores to win the Division III district title. The Cougars next take on Independence on Nov. 2 in the regional semifinals. Lake Catholic is led by senior outside hitter/middle hitter Katie Sowko, junior middle hitter Ava Budrys Rini, freshman middle hitter/outside hitter Ahnna Bergant, junior Libero/defensive specialist Julia Oster, and senior setter Hannah Pattie.
