Sandy Creek routs Johnson for GHSA AAA boys basketball state championship

Patriots have little trouble defending the title they won one year ago

MACON, GEORGIA – Sandy Creek entered Thursday’s GHSA AAA boys basketball state championship game, at the Macon Centerplex, as a prohibitive favorite to win its second straight state crown. The Patriots did not disappoint.

Facing Johnson-Savannah, a Cinderella squad which surprised many by reaching the championship game, Sandy Creek (27-3) rolled to a 79-49 victory.

The Patriots got offense from plenty of sources as five players scored in double figures, led by by a double-double from Micah Smith, the Region 4 Player of the Year, who scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Jacobi Robinson had a team-high 18 points, while Jared White, PJ Green and Amari Brown combined for 35 points.

Johnson, which got a game-high 20 points from Joshua Quarterman, the Region 3 Player of the Year, hung tough early in the first quarter, but Sandy Creek broke an 11-11 tie with an 11-0 run, which was followed by a 16-2 surge to take a 42-22 halftime lead to all but assure the Patriots’ second straight state championship.
