After more than 20 years as a head football coach and winning a state championship, Macon County’s Dexter Copeland feels like it’s time to call it a career.

According to a report by 41NBC, Copeland announced that he will be retiring, ending his tenure as head coach at Macon County after six season. Copeland finished with an overall record of 177-90 in 23 seasons, winning a Class A state championship in 2016.

In 2023, the Bulldogs finished a final record of 10-3 on the season. Per the report, Copeland plans on finishing the school year teaching.

Copeland took over the Macon County program in 2015, guiding the Bulldogs to the postseason in all nine seasons. His career also included significant time at Twiggs County, where he served as head coach from 2001 to 2009. He would return to Twiggs County for another stint in 2014.

Between his stops at Twiggs County, Copeland led Baldwin’s program and his teams made the playoffs in three of four seasons. The Braves had a downward trajectory when it came to wins, starting from a high of 10 in his first season to just three in his last.
