Top 25 Georgia high school football rankings (9/5/2023)

Grayson slides back into the Top 10; Roswell jumps four spots to No. 18

The biggest movers in this week's SBLive Sports Georgia Football Power 25 include Grayson, which slides back into the Top 10, and Roswell, which is up four spots to No. 18 after an impressive Week 3 victory.

There wasn't much change in the Top 10. Mill Creek and Langston Hughes switched spots, and Grayson knocks Benedictine out of the Top 10.

Here’s the complete breakdown of our Week 3 SBLive Sports Georgia Football Power 25 high school football rankings for the state of Georgia. 

1. Buford

(3-0)

North Cobb had two weeks to prepare for No. 1 ranked Buford. And, while it was close for a while, the Wolves asserted themselves in the second half and pulled away to a comfortable 45-28 win. The Wolves are 3-0 and haven’t even reached their peak in 2023.

2. Colquitt County

(3-0)

The Packers haven’t received as much love in other rankings with where they are ranked as low as 5 in Class 7A alone, but we are believers. The Packers improved to 3-0 on the season after dominating Tift County, 40-2, last Friday. The Packers have been great so far, but we will find out a lot about them in their next two games when they tangle with two ranked opponents in Lee County and Cedar Grove.

3. Mill Creek

(3-0)

The Hawks move up one spot in this week’s rankings after improving to 3-0 on the season. There are a lot of people sleeping on the Hawks so far this season. They graduated a good amount off of their Class 7A state championship team from last season, but the Hawks are much better than some are giving them credit for three weeks into the season.

4. Langston Hughes

(2-1)

The Panthers had a disappointing Week 3 performance against Butler (North Carolina). They got down 17-0 before eventually losing the game 30-27. Butler is a solid team out of North Carolina, but another loss like that will see the Panthers slide down the rankings further.

5. Walton

(2-0)

The Raiders were off in Week 3, but remain at No. 5 after two impressive wins to start the season. The Raiders will be back in action this Friday against an undermanned Pope squad.

6. Carrollton

(2-1)

The Trojans have rebounded nicely after losing to Langston Hughes in a Week 1 thriller. They have a winning record for the firs time this season after taking down a good Rome team, 33-13, last Friday night, and they remain at No. 6 as a result.

7. Parkview

(2-0)

The Panthers were off last weekend after two great wins to start the season. Week 4 will be a fun week for the Panthers, who will face their former head coach, who is now the head man at North Gwinnett. The Panthers beat North Gwinnett handily last season and will be the heavy favorites again this season. 

8. Westlake

(3-0)

The Lions found themselves in a shootout last Friday night against Cedar Grove and came out victorious, 46-41. This isn’t the strongest Cedar Grove team in recent memory, but it was a great win nonetheless. They remain at No. 8 in this weeks’ rankings. 

9. Grayson

(2-1)

The Rams were embarrassed in Week 1 against Walton, but after back-to-back shutout victories, they find themselves ranked No. 9 in the state. The Rams will get a great test Friday night against one of the better teams in South Carolina to affirm their spot in the Top 10. 

10. Norcross

(1-1)

The Blue Devils were off in Week 3 and fall just one spot down to No. 10. The Blue Devils will be back in action Friday night against Archer, who has been a punching bag for the likes of North Gwinnett and Mill Creek in recent weeks.

11. Benedictine

(3-0)

The Cadets fall out of the Top 10 after a so-so performance against Westminster last Friday night. They won the game, 27-14, but it was probably a game they should have won by a bigger margin. They will get their first real test of the season next Friday against No. 12 Ware County.

12. Ware County

(3-0)

The Gators scored an impressive Week 3 win, defeating defending state champs Baldwin, 48-20. The Gators come in at No. 13 in this week's rankings, but will have a chance to jump up when they tangle with No. 11 Benedictine Friday night.

13. Milton

(1-1)

After a lackluster start to the season, the Eagles had a much-needed off week that will hopefully get their season back on a good trajectory. The Eagles entered the season with high expectations, and with eight games left, everything is still ahead of them.

14. Gainesville

(3-0)

The Red Elephants won another game, a 30-22 decision over Coconut Creek (Florida), and it was a game they should have won. Are they one of the favorites in Class 6A? Absolutely. Are they a Top 10 team in the state of Georgia? Not right now.

15. Cedar Grove

(1-2)

The Saints have a losing record after three games for the first time since 2012. They were very close to knocking off No. 8 Westlake on the road last Friday night after having a lead late in the fourth quarter. The Saints are still a good team in Class 3A, but their days of being talked about being one of the top teams in the state are over, at least for now. 

16. Creekside

(2-1)

The Seminoles faced off against the No. 1 team in the country last Friday night, Mater Dei (California) and they were no competition for the Monarchs, who crushed them 62-0. They fall back one spot to No. 16 in this week’s rankings.

17. Lee County

(3-0)

The Trojans move up to No. 17 in this week’s rankings after another impressive performance. The Trojans improved to 3-0 on the season after blowing out Lithia Springs and now have their sights set on No. 2 Colquitt County this Friday night

18. Roswell

(3-0)

The Hornets are picking up steam after dismantling Marietta, 51-14, last Friday night to improve to 3-0 on the season. They move up four spots to No. 18 in this week’s rankings and will now tangle with No. 13 Milton this Friday looking to move up the rankings more.

19. Collins Hill

(1-1)

Coming out of a bye, the Eagles won their first game of the season, defeating Brookwood, 31-17, in Week 3 to draw even on the season. After playing Milton close in Week 1, the Eagles will get another big test this Friday when they travel to play No. 15 Cedar Grove.

20. Prince Avenue Christian

(3-0)

The Wolverines move up one spot to No. 20 in this week’s rankings after improving to 3-0 on the season. They blew out Athens Academy, 52-21, and will travel to Monroe Area this Friday.

21. Thomas County Central

(3-0)

The Yellow Jackets move up to No. 21 in this week’s rankings after taking down Bainbridge, 45-14, last Friday night to improve to 3-0 on the season. They are off this Friday before playing Brooks County the following week.

22. Calvary Day

(2-0)

Back in action after being off in Week 2, the Cavaliers dismantled ELCA, 64-6, to improve to 2-0 on the season. They will face Charlotte Christian (North Carolina) this Friday.

23. Woodward Academy

(1-1)

The War Eagles were off last week, but will be back in action this Friday night against Marist. They come in at No. 23 in this week’s rankings. 

24. Houston County

(3-0)

The Bears move up one spot to No. 24 after blowing out West Laurens, 55-14, last Friday night. They will travel to face Locust Grove this Friday.

25. North Cobb

(0-2)

The Warriors fell to 0-2 on the season last Friday, but their schedule hasn’t exactly been the easiest. Both losses have come against Top 10 teams, including last Friday’s 45-28 loss to No. 1 ranked Buford. The Warriors were competitive in that game, and that’s good enough to get them into the Top 25 despite not having a win this season.
