Dramatic comebacks, perfect records and first-time achievements were commonplace during the 2023-23 Georgia high school season.

SBLive Georgia set out to identify the boys and girls teams across the country who stood above the rest during the fall, winter and spring.

Here are 14 teams worthy of national recognition following their special 2022-23 seasons in the Peach State. Choose one of these teams as voting will run until August 31st, 2023

Mill Creek, football: In the Peach State’s highest classification of high school football and against a Carrollton team many thought would win it all, Mill Creek proved many wrong. The Hawks went 14-1 and defeated the Trojans 70-35 for the 7A state title.

Langston Hughes, football: 15-0, the perfect season. There was no other better way to cap the memorable campaign than defeating Gainesville 35-28 for the 6A state championship in Atlanta.

Ware County, football: For the first time in program history, the Gators were able to come away saying they were state champions. Ware County pulled off the 5A state championship in a 38-13 win over Warner Robins and capped a 14-0 season.

Prince Avenue Christian, football: The Wolverines made scoring seem easy all season long en route to a 14-0 record and coming away with the A state championship. Prince Avenue soundly defeated Swainsboro 52-34 in the state title game.

Wheeler, boys basketball: It was to be expected out of this group, but they had to beat a good Cherokee team four times in a season to do it. Wheeler finished 26-6 and as the 7A state champions. It was a season to remember.

Kell, boys basketball: Winning the program’s first-ever state championship was never going to be easy. Kell bested Eagle’s Landing for the 6A title, finishing 28-2 and giving the program its first state title.

River Ridge, girls basketball: When it came to the best of the best on the girls basketball circuit, the Knights were certainly a team that couldn’t be questioned. River Ridge finished an impressive 27-5 and won the 6A state championship.

Brookwood, girls basketball: The Broncos of Snellville made it look easy all season long. A near-perfect season, finishing with a 31-1 record and coming away with the 7A state championship has this team as one for the books.

Lowndes, baseball: With the odds seemingly stacked against them heading into the 7A final against Parkview, Lowndes never flinched. The Vikings ended the dream season with a championship-clinching win over the Panthers and ending with a 29-13 record.

North Cobb Christian, baseball: Winning over 30 games and coming away with a state crown sounds like a pretty nice season. That’s what the Eagles were able to accomplish in 2023, going 34-7 and taking home the 2A state championship.

Buford, softball: Sitting among the top softball programs in the country all season long, the Wolves capped it off with a state championship in hand. A 32-1 record and a dominating 9-1 win over East Coweta earned Buford the 7A state championship.

Wesleyan, softball: Among Wesleyan’s two losses all season long came up against Buford in a 4-0 loss. Outside of a season-opening loss to Sprayberry, this Wolves team was otherwise perfect. Wesleyan won the 3A state championship and did behind a gritty 3-1 win over Jackson.

Lassiter, boys soccer: The Trojans were loaded with talent all season long and it ended up culminating in the team being one of the nation’s best. Lassiter went 18-2 and nabbed the 6A state championship.

Chamblee, girls soccer: Playing out of 5A, the Bulldogs made sure they finished the season strong. Not losing a single game all season, Chamblee went 21-0-1 and notched a state title in 5A in dominating fashion.
