North Fort Myers’ Isaiah Newson scores 67 in playoff opener

Sophomore surpassed 1,000 career points just last week

One of Southwest Florida’s top players is just a sophomore and he’s already breaking bench marks that aren’t usually surpassed until junior or senior seasons.

After surpassing the 1,000-point career mark in his final regular season game last week, Isaiah Newson scored an eye-shattering 67-points Tuesday night as his North Fort Myers team routed Ida Baker in the opening round of the FHSAA Class 6A, District 11 playoffs.

North Fort Myers now advances to Thursday's District 11 semifinals at top-seeded Charlotte.

Following his 1,000th-point milestone, Newson was asked about the accomplishment

“It was just so many emotions," Newson said to NBC 2’s Jaron May. "It felt real good to actually hit that 1k mark. I think my ability to understand the game. I know when to push the ball, when not to push the ball, when to take shots.”

Newson made a name for himself last season starring for Cape Coral High School before transferring to North Fort Myers during the offseason.

This season for the Red Knights, Newson is averaging a team-high 22.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists per game.

Last season at Cape Coral, Newson led the Seahawks in scoring as a freshman, averaging 22.3 points per game.
