Florida's top high school softball players: Meet the state's Top 15 pitchers heading into 2024

Who are the top pitchers in Florida high school softball this season?

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a look at some of the top high school softball players in Florida.

We'll start with the top pitchers heading into the 2024 campaign.

Jayden Heavener, Pace: The LSU commit went 18-2 in 2023 with a staggering 0.22 ERA (only allowed four earned runs) and 300 strikeouts. 

Katelynn Oxley, Bartow: The Florida commitment and Class 6A state champ had a stellar junior season. Oxley went 23-2, striking out 307 batters and had a 0.50 ERA. 

Jasmine Francik, Melbourne: The junior fireballer led the Sunshine State last year with 411 strikeouts with a 19-4 record and 0.19 ERA. Francik will be heading to Florida State after the high school season. 

Morgen Talley, Clearwater Calvary Christian: In leading the Warriors to the Class 3A title last season, Talley performed at the plate and on the mound. The NC State commitment went 12-2 with a 1.11 ERA and 174 strikeouts and also hit 10 home runs for Calvary Christian. 

Sophia Bertorelli, Coral Springs Charter: Just a sophomore last season, Bertorelli was sensational for the Panthers. The Boston College commitment went 20-1 with a 0.44 ERA and 254 strikeouts. 

Yessenia Lopez, Doral Academy: Though the Firebirds fell just short of the 6A state championship, Lopez had a tremendous junior campaign. The UCF commitment went 19-6 with 246 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA. 

Sophia Kardatzke, University Christian: Leading all pitchers in the 904, as a junior last season was hard to hit off of on a nightly basis. The USC Upstate commit went 20-0 with a 1.35 ERA and 219 strikeouts in the 2023 season. 

Mallory Wheeler, Jensen Beach: The junior pitcher was one of the top strikeout leaders in the state last year. The Louisiana commitment fanned 300 batters and had a 1.28 ERA. 

Violet Flynn, Crystal River: Just a freshman last season, Flynn showed she will be a force this spring for the Pirates. Flynn went 9-7 with a 1.16 ERA and 278 strikeouts  The Crystal River ace is getting plenty of attention heading into her sophomore season. 

Kennedy Temples, Marianna: The junior pitcher stood out in the 2023 season for the Bulldogs. The Stetson commitment went 22-2 with a 1.18 ERA and 278 strikeouts. 

Lucy Mondok, East Lake: The only other freshman pitcher on this list, Mondok was extremely impressive for the Eagles in Year 1. Mondok went 19-5 with 184 strikeouts and a 1.27 ERA. Heading into her sophomore season, Mondok has received a lot of interest from universities. 

Leila Ammon, Gulf Breeze: Ammon had herself a junior season to remember for the Dolphins. The Middle Tennessee State pitcher fanned 206 batters and boasted a 0.68 ERA (allowed just 10 earned runs all season long). 

Grace Jones, Episcopal School: One of the state’s 2023 leaders when it came to strikeouts fanned 344 batters with a record of 22-5 on the mound and 1.02 ERA. 

Ava Braswell, Hernando: Can’t deny that Braswell was one of the top pitchers on the North Suncoast and Tampa Bay Area in 2023. The Stetson commitment went 16-5 with a 1.61 ERA and 214 strikeouts for the Leopards. 

Shaylen Byrd, Baldwin: The Indians’ ace pitcher is coming off a strong 2023 campaign, going 14-2 with a 1.86 ERA and struck out 229 batters.
