Calvary Christian (Florida) promotes assistant Wes Safford to head football coach

Safford has been apart of the Warriors’ staff since 2017

Clearwater Calvary Christian High School didn’t need to look far when searching for its next head football coach.

The new lead man was on staff to begin with.

Calvary Christian Head of School David Kilgore, in an email obtained by SBLive Sports Florida, has promoted offensive assistant Wes Safford to head coach.

Safford is no stranger to the program as he’s been on the staff since 2017. Down below is the excerpt from the email given to SBLive Florida on Safford’s appointment as head coach.

With the sadness of Coach Crume's resignation, I am thankful to share my excitement and enthusiasm to announce that Coach Wes Safford has accepted the position as head football coach for the Warriors. Coach Safford joined the CCHS faculty and staff in 2017 from Crown College where he had been serving as wide receivers and quarterback coach. Coach Safford earned two Bachelor's degrees at Crown College. One in Biblical Studies and one in Business Administration. During his undergraduate students at Crown, Coach Safford was the starting quarterback for 3 years. Coach Safford also earned his Master's Degree in Organizational Leadership before departing Crown to come to CCHS.”

Safford steps in for Reggie Crume, who stepped down as the program’s head coach earlier this week.

Crume, who will remain with the school through the spring, had been the Warriors' head coach since 2018, compiling an overall record of 46-23. Crume's most successful seasons have come in the last two years, with the lead man guiding Calvary Christian to back-to-back region final appearances.

The Warriors had back-to-back 10-3 seasons under Crume's watch, but face a series of graduations that will definitely be felt by the team. Calvary Christian graduates quarterback Jacob Drackett (Air Force signee), offensive lineman Joseph Ionata (Alabama signee) and linebacker Callahan Blair (Vanderbilt signee).

There's plenty of talent returning to the Warriors as well, with players like wide receivers Josh Robinson (52 catches, 1,083 yards), Austin Ho (52 catches, 769 yards) and running back Sean Cuono (1,024 yards, eight touchdowns).
