Southwest Florida Football Roundup for Week 8

Naples, Fort Myers, Estero among teams to earn big district wins

Here is a roundup of the high school football games in Collier and Lee counties in Week 8 of the season on Friday, Oct. 14:

Naples 59, Lely 0: The Golden Eagles (6-1) pounced on Lely early with its full arsenal of weapons. Naples scored twice in the first five minutes and led 49-0 at halftime.

Arkansas commit Isaiah Augustave had 201 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries.

Kendrick Raphael, who recently decommitted from Iowa, had two touchdowns and 91 yards. The Eagles also got touchdowns from Keylijiah Williams, Jack Melton and Niko Boyce.

Lowndes (Ga.) 43, Dunbar 12: Following a long bus ride to Valdosta, Dunbar held two early leads against the perennial power in Georgia's Class 7A. However, Lowndes scored 36 straight points in the final three quarters to hand Dunbar (3-1) its first loss.

The Tigers scored first when Shawn Russ caught a 12-yard pass from Landon Winterbottom. After Lowndes went up 7-6, Dunbar regained a 12-7 lead on Eric Fletcher's 65-yard kickoff returns. It was all Lowndes the rest of the way.

Lowndes raised $14,500 for Hurricane Ian relief and presented it to Dunbar during the game.

Fort Myers 35, South Fort Myers 0: Fort Myers' defense set the tone by forcing a fumble on the game's first play. The Green Wave (3-2) went on to hold South (1-4) to less than 50 rushing yards.

Fort Myers running back Ricardo Noel was the star of the night. He finished with 136 yards and three touchdowns. The Wave also got rushing touchdowns from Pat Clemons and Madrid Trucker.

Barron Collier 31, Golden Gate 6: Bryan Daniels continued his strong senior season, rushing for 203 yards and three touchdowns to lead Barron Collier to victory. The Cougars rebounded from their first loss of the season last week (to Naples) and improved to 5-1.

Cougars quarterback Tommy Mooncotch, who had a career-best 296 passing yards last week, threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Golden Gate sophomore Trayvon Jean had his team's only touchdowns. Jean rushed for 140 yards to put him over 1,000 for the season.

Estero 42, Key West 37: After winning 7-0 and 3-0 the previous two games, the Wildcats won on the road in a wild shootout. The game went back and forth early, but Estero (6-0) took a 42-20 lead in the fourth quarter. Key West scored twice late to nearly pull over the comeback.

Rutgers recruit Jason Duclona caught two touchdown passes for Estero. The Wildcats' defense returned two fumbles for scores. Estero won its first of three Class 2S-District 16 games. If the Cats can beat Gateway next week, it will set up a district title tilt against Bishop Verot on Oct. 28.

Immokalee 29, Palmetto Ridge 0: The Indians have had a quick turnaround under new coach James Delgado. With the shutout victory, Immokalee now has a shot at a district title after going 2-14 the past two seasons.

Quarterback Trannon Villareal accounted for all four touchdowns, throwing for three and running for another. Two of those TD passes went to Isaiah Allen. Immokalee defensive back Schneider Saint-Germain had two interceptions.

Immokalee's game at Gulf Coast on Oct. 28 will decide the Class 4S-District 16 champion.

Gulf Coast 45, West Broward 13: Sharks quarterback Konner Barrett threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns after missing last week's game. The senior connected on 13 of 15 passes and ran for a 50-yard touchdown as well.

Gulf Coast's defense was led by William Brockmeier, who had three sacks. The Sharks earned their second straight blowout victory and have outscored opponents 87-12 in that span.

Bishop Verot 67, Gateway 0: The Vikings looked sharp following a long layoff due to Hurricane Ian. Sophomore quarterback Carter Smith had 319 passing yards and five touchdowns in the first half along as Bishop Verot rolled to the district win.

The Vikings (4-2) scored 25 points in the first quarter, then 28 in the second. Bishop Verot scored on every one of its possessions. Tookie Watts and and Trevontay Watts both had TD receptions.

Community School 35, Bradenton Christian 10: The Seahawks were strong on both sides of the ball in their second straight win. CSN (3-1) got two rushing touchdowns from Grayson Kerscher, while Tariq Morame and Decker Crosby also ran for TDs. Sean McNamara had a receiving touchdown for CSN.

Pahokee 21, First Baptist 12: First Baptist held a second quarter lead on the road. However, Pahokee scored twice late in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead. Sam Sparacio and Rich Mellien had rushing touchdowns for FBA (3-2).

Cypress Lake 10, East Lee 0: The offenses struggled after a long hurricane layoff. The game's only touchdown came after East Lee turned the ball over at its own 5-yard line. E.J. Codie took advantage with a rushing TD to put Cypress Lake up 10-0 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers also got a 32-yard field goal from Zeke Dube-Garrett.

Evangelical Christian 33, St. John Neumann 0: The Sentinels remained undefeated (5-0) thanks to a strong defensive performance. Evangelical Christian forced five turnovers.

ECS quarterback Tanner Helton passed for 225 yards and three touchdowns. The Sentinels also rushed for more than 200 yards. L.J. Blackwell ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns, while Timmy Miller ran for 84 yards.

Canterbury 49, Boca Raton Christian 0: The Cougars scored three times in the first quarter and improved to 5-0 on the season. Leroy Roker scored three times in the first half, on runs of 25, 50 and 65 yards. Roker finished with 176 rushing yards while Canterbury had 236 as a team.
