We’ve picked out eight sophomore football players in Delaware that have stood out this season.

We are just past the mid-point part of the 2023 high school football season here in Delaware and there’s no shortage of underclassmen performing at a high level. 

It’s no surprise that freshmen are showing out in the Blue Hen State as that’s been the case in the past many times over. This list of underclassmen features some of the top sophomore football players we’ve seen or have been on the rise in Delaware. Take a look at our list and vote for who you feel has been the top performing sophomore high school football player in Delaware.

Here are the nominations:

Evan Budinger, QB, Red Lion Christian: The Red Lion Christian starting quarterback has looked good all throughout the 2023 season, throwing for 1,358 yards and 13 touchdowns versus just five interceptions. 

Jacque Wilson, LB, Red Lion Christian: Wilson has been by far the state’s leading tackler when it comes to sophomores. The linebacker has racked up 101 tackles, six have gone for a loss and threw sacks. 

Odell Teel, QB, Delaware Military Academy: Teel has accounted for 1,127 all-purpose yards of offense and seven touchdowns this season for Delaware Military Academy. He also plays defensive end. 

Davon Handy, RB, Indian River: The Indian River running back has had a solid season, carrying the ball 67 times for 492 yards and has scored four touchdowns. 

Phoenix Henriquez, WR, Smyrna: Henriquez has had a strong season so far for the Eagles as the wide receiver has hauled in 34 passes for 628 yards and eight touchdowns. 

Nybree Davis, DE, Hodgson Vo-Tech: The 6-foot, 180-pound defensive end has come off the edge and caused havoc for Hodgson Vo-Tech this season. Davis has tallied five sacks this fall. 

Quarrel Richards, LB, Cape Henlopen: Richards, a 5-foot-11, 196-pound linebacker, has been a mainstay in the middle for the Vikings. The middle backer has made 53 tackles, five for a loss and two sacks. 

Billy Lang, CB, Tatnall: The wide receiver/cornerback has made a difference in the secondary for Tatnall, intercepting three passes this season. Lang has also rushed for 58 yards on the ground.
