Harvard-Westlake hosts Centennial in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division tournament

Top-seeded Harvard-Westlake will kick off the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs on Friday at home against No. 8 seed Corona Centennial

The Wolverines stunned the Huskies in last year's Open Division regional championship, and Centennial would love the chance to return the favor when these two meet again on Friday.

CIF Southern Section high school basketball: Sierra Canyon vs. Harvard Westlake from January 19, 2024.

Trent Perry and Harvard-Westlake fell to Sierra Canyon 74-68 in a Misson League battle on January 19, 2024.

Harvard-Westlake (26-3)

The Wolverines are ranked No. 1 in the Top 25 California rankings and No. 20 in the Top 25 national rankings, and earned the top seed in the Open Division playoffs after defeating Crespi in the Mission League tournament championship last week.

Their only two in-state losses this season came against Notre Dame and Sierra Canyon, who were both ranked in the national rankings earlier this year, and their only other loss was a one-point defeat at the hands of Columbus (Florida), who is currently the No. 2 ranked team in the nation.

Led by USC commit Trent Perry, Harvard-Westlake will be looking to win its second consecutive CIF State Open Division championship.

Centennial (20-10)

As the first team to win three consecutive Southern Section Open Division titles, the Huskies are not strangers to success in this tournament.

However, they will have their hands full this year taking on top-seeded Harvard-Westlake before back-to-back games against No. 4 seed St. John Bosco and No. 5 seed Sierra Canyon.

To survive and advance, they will likely lean heavily on Arizona commit Carter Bryant and UCLA commit Eric Freeny, who are ranked No. 20 and No. 94, respectively, in ESPN's Class of 2024 rankings.
