Justin Pippen ‘grew up’ in Sierra Canyon’s victory over Harvard-Westlake: Southern California boys basketball scores, stats, updates (1/19/2024)

Justin Pippen, son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half

CHATSWORTH, CALIFORNIA - Sierra Canyon senior Justin Pippen had just three points and the Trailblazers were trailing the defending CIF State Open Division champions at halftime.

“I knew I had to be more aggressive,” Pippen said. “All my teammates and coaches were telling to shoot more.”

Said Sierra Canyon coach Andre Chevalier: “He turned into a monster in the second half.”

That he did.

Pippen, the son of NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen, scored 21 of his team-high 24 points in the second half, including six 3-pointers to anchor Sierra Canyon to a 74-68 Mission League win over Harvard-Westlake at home Friday night.

“Justin Pippen grew up tonight,” Chevalier said. “He’s been finding his way the last few games.”

Bryce Cofield tallied 15 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter, including a put-back, and-1 that was part of an 18-0 run in the final frame (VIDEO). He also made 4 of 5 free throws to help close the game. Noah Williams scored 13 and Isaiah Elohim added 12 for the Trailblazers (21-1).

“We’ve felt like we’re the best team in the state,” Pippen said. “Tonight is just a little ego boost, we love it.”

Harvard-Westlake’s Nik Khamenia had 21 points and USC-bound guard Trent Perry had 23. Robert Hinton scored 14.

Harvard-Westlake (20-3) led 36-31 at halftime and led 58-50 early in the fourth quarter before Sierra Canyon’s 18-0 run that led to a 68-58 advantage.

The Wolverines dropped their second straight game after falling to Notre Dame Wednesday. The last time Harvard-Westlake lost two games in a row was in June of 2021, falling to Mater Dei (62-57) and Damien (77-72) in the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs (pool play).
