Roosevelt beats St. Pius at State Preview Classic: Live updates, scores recap
ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA - Of the nine high school boys basketball games slated for the State Preview Classic presented by SBLive, the Eastvale Roosevelt versus St. Pius matchup provided an Open Division-like game.
Despite Roosevelt having more certainty for a berth into the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs, the Mustangs' 59-54 win over St. Pius makes its case even stronger Saturday afternoon at Colony High.
Brayden Burries, a 5-star junior, led the way with 19 points. Issac Williamson added 12 and Darnez Slater had 13. St. Pius' Tryone Riley had 18 points and Douglas Langford pitched in 12.
The game's largest lead came when Darnez Slater hit a 3-pointer in the middle of the fourth quarter to give Roosevelt a 51-43 lead. St. Pius' Tylon Williams hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to bring the Warriors within 57-54, but Dominic Copenhagen's layup put the game away.
Half the field (18 teams) in Saturday's event are among SBLive's latest Top 25 CIF Southern Section rankings, including No. 2 Mater Dei, No. 4 Eastvale Roosevelt, No. 5 Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks, No. 8 Damien and No. 10 St. Pius.
