San Diego Section boys basketball: 10 breakout players during 2023-24 season

Sophomore Jaiden Bailes has played a big role for third-ranked St. Augustine

The 2023-24 high school basketball season is closing in on the midpoint of league play in the San Diego Section and it's time to take a look at some of San Diego's top players who have used the season to make a name for themselves.

Here are 10 players who have had breakout performances in the 2023-24 basketball season.

(Players are listed in alphabetical order)

Amon Andrews, Francis Parker, Jr.

Andrews has played in 12 games for the Lancers due to the sit out period following his transfer from Cathedral Catholic. He’s averaging 17 points, four rebounds and three assists per game while knocking down 45 percent of his three-point attempts.

Jaiden Bailes, St. Augustine, Soph.

Bailes played sparingly on last season’s Open Division championship team and has shown an impressive shooting ability through 20 games as a sophomore. He was named to the National Division All-Tournament team at The Holiday Classic and was named game MVP when St. Augustine beat Loyola at Crypto.com Arena in early January.

Jahsir Bosley, El Cajon Valley, Sr.

Bosley averaged 17 points per game last season and is among the San Diego Section leaders with 26 points per game this year. He’s also averaging seven rebounds and seven assists per game and has hit the 10-assist make in four games.

Chris Carrillo, La Jolla Country Day, Jr.

After playing a secondary role for the Torreys last season, Carrillo has stepped up to lead Country Day as a junior. He scored a career high 44 points in last month’s 66-57 win at Cathedral Catholic.

Lincoln Grogan, Mater Dei Catholic, Soph.

Grogan averaged eight points per game as a freshman and has nearly doubled that with 15 points and six rebounds per game through 19 games in year two. He’s closing in on 100 career made three-pointers, shooting 46 percent from deep in his first two seasons.

Dax Hall, Santa Fe Christian, Soph.

Hall has taken a big step forward in year two, pairing with All-CIF guard Brycen Mackenzie in the Eagles’ backcourt. He finished with 21 points in The Holiday Classic Governor’s Division championship game.

Sammell Humphries, Olympian, Soph.

Humphries averaged four points per game as a freshman and has stepped up with 12 points and six rebounds per game as a sophomore, helping the Eagles start 20-0.

Matin Madadkar, Torrey Pines, Sr.

Madadkar averaged six points per game as a junior and has nearly tripled that total to lead Torrey Pines with 15 points per game as a senior. He had a career high 29 points in a win over Seattle-O’Dea in December.

Darius Montgomery, Mar Vista, Soph.

Montgomery averaged eight points per game as a freshman and has raised that number to 19 per game in his second season. He’s improved his shooting percentages across the board and is coming off a 27-point game against Hilltop last week.

Grant Stewart, Point Loma, Jr.

Stewart has doubled his scoring output going from eight points to 17 points per game for the 14-5 Pointers. He’s coming off a 27-point, six-rebound, and four-assist performance in last week’s win over Clairemont.
