Look: Doryan Onwuchekwa scores 22 points, leads Faith Family past JSerra at Holiday Classic

Faith Family Academy will play in the National Division semifinal round for the second time in three years

SAN DIEGO — Faith Family Academy pulled off the first major upset of the 2023 Holiday Classic National Division, delivering JSerra Catholic their first loss of the season. The Eagles led by six points at halftime  and outscored the Lions by 13 points in the final quarter for a 60-42 win.

Leading the way for the Eagles was senior Doryan Onwuchekwa. The Colorado-bound big man finished with a game high 22 points, showing off his long range ability with two second half three-point baskets.

JSerra entered on a 13-game winning streak and had climbed their way up amongst California's best alongside Harvard-Westlake and St. John Bosco. Senior forward Sebastian Rancik, who will join Onwuchekwa at Colorado next season, led the Lions with 18 points. Fellow senior Aidan Fowler added 16 points for the Lions who only had two players score more than four points.

After Rancik opened the fourth quarter with a bucket that cut the lead to two, Faith Family proceeded to go on a 20-5 run to close out the quarterfinal win. Faith Family endured a stretch of seven losses in eight games earlier in the season but have now rallied to win four straight, reaching Friday's semifinal round.
