San Diego Section football playoff scores, recaps: St. Augustine, La Jolla Country Day win in overtime

St. Augustine and Mission Hills will play for the San Diego Section Division 1 title on Friday night

The San Diego Section football playoffs resumed on Friday night, with semifinal games being played in Divisions 1-4.

Below is a game by game recap from the second week of football playoffs in the San Diego Section.

DIVISION 1 (Bracket)

(2) Mission Hills 24, (3) El Camino 19

Mission Hills beat the Wildcats for the 13th consecutive time, advancing to the Division 1 title game for the second year in a row. The Grizzlies were able to stave off a late drive from El Camino to seal the five-point victory. After losing the Division 1 championship game in heartbreaking fashion last season, the Grizzlies will get their chance at redemption.

(5) St. Augustine 28, (9) Madison 27 (OT)

The Saints overcame an 21-13 fourth quarter deficit to force overtime. St. Augustine scored on a touchdown pass to Ezaya Tokio to open the extra period and tacked on the extra point. Madison responded with a touchdown of their own but their 2-point pass attempt fell incomplete, giving the Saints their second win of the season against the Warhawks.

A year after losing to Mission Hills 42-0 in the second round of the Division 1 playoffs, the Saints will get their chance for redemption against the Grizzlies in next Friday's championship game.

DIVISION 2 (Bracket)

(1) Del Norte 9, (5) Point Loma 7

Utah commit Trey Coleman supplied the offense, knocking in three field goals to propel the Nighthawks into their first CIF title game. The 10 wins that Del Norte have compiled this season under first-year head coach Nick Barnett are a school record.

(3) La Jolla 42, (2) Rancho Bernardo 14

La Jolla quarterback Jackson Diehl showcased his dual-threat ability, scoring on the ground and finding younger brother Carson for multiple touchdowns. The Vikings were able to get redemption from an early season loss to Rancho Bernardo and will play for their third section title in the last four full seasons.

DIVISION 3 (Bracket)

(4) Grossmont 30, (1) Mission Bay 14

A year after losing all 10 games, Grossmont will play for a section title. First-year head coach Anthony Lawrence led the Foothillers past top-seeded Mission Bay to reach Saturday's title game. The Foothillers have scored 30 points seven times this season after being shutout in five games last year.

(6) La Jolla Country Day 39, (2) Fallbrook 38 (OT)

The Torreys scored first to open overtime and stuffed the Warriors on their 2-point conversion after their overtime touchdown. La Jolla Country Day has reached double digit wins for the first time since their state runner-up team in 2016.

DIVISION 4 (Bracket)

(1) Mount Miguel 37, (4) Santana 6

Mount Miguel ended a three-game losing streak against Santana, reaching the 37-point mark for the 11th time in 12 games this season. The top-seeded Matadors will play in their first CIF title game since 1980, looking to capture their first title since 1960.

(2) Chula Vista 11, (3) Westview 8

With points at a premium on a muddy Chula Vista field, the Spartans came through with a 22-yard field goal as time expired to eliminate the Wolverines. Chula Vista will enter the title game having won 11 games for the first time since 1990.

DIVISION 5 (Bracket)

(2) Sweetwater 46, (1) Vincent Memorial 37

Sweetwater captured their first CIF title since 2013 on Friday night. The Red Devils had won three games or less six times over the past decade before this season's turnaround. They'll enter the CIF state regional playoffs having won five of their past six games.
