San Diego Section football playoff roundup: Lincoln gets past Helix 45-38 in overtime

Lincoln kicked a field goal at the regulation buzzer to force overtime against the Highlanders.

The San Diego Section playoffs were back in action across all eight divisions on Thursday and Friday.

Below is a game by game recap from the second week of football playoffs in the San Diego Section.

OPEN DIVISION (Bracket)

(1) Lincoln 45, (4) Helix 38 (OT)

After falling behind 21-3 in the first half, Helix came all the way back and took a 31-28 lead with 2:47 left to play in regulation. The Hornets worked their way down the field, kicking a game-tying field goal with one second remaining. Both teams scored rushing touchdowns in the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, Lincoln added another rushing touchdown and proceeded to stop Helix short on 4th down inside the 10-yard line to emerge with the win.

(3) Granite Hills 46, (2) Carlsbad 45 (OT)

Granite Hills went toe-to-toe with Carlsbad on the road and emerged with a one-point overtime victory after converting a walk-off 2-point conversion. The Eagles won their 20th straight game and will make their first appearance in the Open Division championship game.

DIVISION 1 (Bracket)

(9) Madison 21, (1) Torrey Pines 0

Madison recorded their third straight shutout, blanking Torrey Pines 21-0. Running back Jaylon Brown found the end zone three times while Allen Sola and Titus Toilolo each grabbed interceptions.

(5) St. Augustine 32, (4) La Costa Canyon 17

The Saints kept their offense flowing, scoring 27 points or more for the fifth time in six games. Playing the Mavericks for the first time since 2016 and second time in school history, St. Augustine jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Now they're rewarded with a home game in the semifinal round.

(3) El Camino 28, (6) Cathedral Catholic 21

El Camino led 28-7 at halftime and held on for a one-touchdown victory, beating the Dons for the first time since 1993. The Wildcats will now head to Mission Hills in the D1 semis for the second straight year having lost to the Grizzlies in all 11 previous matchups.

(2) Mission Hills 27, (7) San Marcos 13

Giovanni Harte score four times, leading the Grizzlies past San Marcos in a Discovery Bowl rematch. Mission Hills will now host El Camino for the right to play in the San Diego Section Division 1 championship game.

DIVISION 2 (Bracket)

(1) Del Norte 26, (8) Oceanside 11

Del Norte won their ninth game of the season, extending their school record for wins in a season. The Nighthawks, following last week's bye, had the time to reset and continue their charge as the division's top seed.

(5) Point Loma 32, (4) Scripps Ranch 12

Point Loma has been locked in over the past month, having scored 32 points or more in each of the past four games. They'll now get to travel back to the north county next Friday, playing against top-seed Del Norte. The Pointers played Del Norte last season for the first time in school history, losing 49-13 in the semifinal round.

(3) La Jolla 28, (6) Central 22

A series that dates back to 1933, La Jolla came through with a victory over the visiting Spartans. The Vikings will now take on Rancho Bernardo after losing to the Broncos 20-6 in the fourth game of the 2022 season.

(2) Rancho Bernardo 28, (7) Bishop's 18

Rancho Bernardo eliminated Bishop's for the second time in three seasons. The Broncos rushing attack has looked good this season, led by senior Terrick Fisher.

DIVISION 3 (Bracket)

(1) Mission Bay 14, (9) El Capitan 0

El Capitan failed to get on the scoreboard for the first time since they lost to Mater Dei Catholic in 2021. The Buccaneers scored a touchdown in the first quarter and again in the fourth quarter to eliminate the Vaqueros.

(4) Grossmont 24, (5) Santa Fe Christian 21

Grossmont, who took their lumps during league play, edged out Santa Fe Christian. Head coach Anthony Lawrence and the Foothillers will have a chance next week to take down top-seeded Mission Bay.

(6) La Jolla Country Day 35, (3) West Hills 7

The Torreys traveled south to West Hills in Santee and left no doubt. The victory pushes them into the semifinal round of the playoffs for the first time since 2019. They have yet to win a CIF title since they beat Santana for the Division 4 championship in 2016.

(2) Fallbrook 27, (7) Imperial 21

The Warriors were moved into a tougher league this season but find themselves one win away from a repeat trip to the CIF title. Fallbrook last captured a CIF title in 2000, beating Carlsbad 50-12 while playing at Qualcomm Stadium.

DIVISION 4 (Bracket)

(1) Mount Miguel 56, (9) Escondido 13

Mount Miguel rolled past Escondido following last week's bye. Their offense has now scored 40 points or more six games in a row. They'll be looking to end a three-game losing streak against Santana.

(4) Santana 35, (5) Crawford 14

(3) Westview 14, (6) Bonita Vista 10

(2) Chula Vista 27, (7) Olympian 10

DIVISION 5 (Bracket)

(1) Vincent Memorial 47, (4) Hoover 21

(2) Sweetwater 38, (3) El Cajon Valley 15

DIVISION 5-AA (Bracket)

(1) Holtville 49, (5) Maranatha Christian 0

(2) Army-Navy 50, (3) Tri-City Christian 0
