San Diego Section football playoff roundup: San Marcos shuts out Poway in opening round

The Knights defense continued their recent form in Friday's win over Poway

The San Diego Section playoffs kicked off on Friday night in seven of the eight brackets.

Below is a game by game recap of each San Diego Section opening round game.

DIVISION 1 (Bracket)

(9) Madison 27, (8) Mater Dei Catholic 0: Madison jumped on the Crusaders early, leading 20-0 at halftime and showcased their talented defense for a second consecutive shutout. The Warhawks will travel to top-seeded Torrey Pines next week.

(5) St. Augustine 37, (12) Mira Mesa 10: The Saints beat Mira Mesa 37-10, taking their ninth straight game against the Marauders. They'll travel to four-seed La Costa Canyon next week, taking on the Mavericks for just the second time in school history.

(6) Cathedral Catholic 49, (11) Ramona 7: Cathedral Catholic led 14-7 after one quarter before reeling off 35 straight points over the final three quarters. The Dons will travel to El Camino next week for the first time since 1992.

(7) San Marcos 23, (10) Poway 0: San Marcos scored once in each quarter and held their sixth straight opponent to 14 points or less. The Knights will get a rematch in the Discovery Bowl next week against rival Mission Hills.

DIVISION 2 (Bracket)

(8) Oceanside 28, (9) Steele Canyon 7: After going winless in 2022, the Pirates are into the second round of the playoffs and have their first playoff win since 2019.

(5) Point Loma 43, (12) San Pasqual 35: Point Loma withstood a shootout on the road, allowing five touchdown passes from San Pasqual's Robert Renteria. The Pointers will head to Scripps Ranch in round two.

(6) Central Union 14, (11) Eastlake 13: The Spartans emerged with a one-point win in their first ever matchup against the Titans. They'll travel to La Jolla to face a powerful Vikings offense in round two.

(7) Bishop's 23, (10) Brawley 21: The Knights kicked a field goal as time expired to escape with a first round victory. Their reward is a playoff game at Rancho Bernardo for the second time in three years.

DIVISION 3 (Bracket)

(9) El Capitan 30, (8) Patrick Henry 14: Brandt Barker tossed four touchdown passes, finding four different receivers to win on the road. They'll take on top-seeded Mission Bay next Friday.

(5) Santa Fe Christian 35, (12) San Diego 9: The Eagles had to go on the road due to San Diego being a league champion but had no problems with the Cavers. Santa Fe Christian will get Grossmont next round.

(6) La Jolla Country 36, (11) Morse 8: La Jolla Country Day made quick work of Morse in the first ever matchup between the two schools. The Torreys will head south to West Hills next Friday.

(7) Imperial 16, (10) Valley Center 14: Imperial scored all 14 points in the fourth quarter but fell just short in their second matchup at Imperial this season. A trip to Fallbrook awaits the Tigers in week two.

DIVISION 4 (Bracket)

(9) Escondido 37, (8) Calexico 21: Escondido traveled out to Calexico and returned with their first playoff victory since 2019. Their reward is a trip to top-seed Mount Miguel next week.

(5) Crawford at (12) Orange Glen: Crawford advanced via forfeit due to Orange Glen having to surrender their league championship following an ineligible player.

(6) Bonita Vista 35, (11) Coronado 0: The Barons scored 35 points across the second and third quarters while recording their second shutout of the season.

(7) Olympian 31, (10) Escondido Charter 15: Olympian led 28-9 at halftime and limited the White Tigers to 191 total yards. They'll travel to Chula Vista on Friday having lost to the Spartans 27-8 earlier in the season.

DIVISION 5 (Bracket)

(1) Vincent Memorial 42, (8) Valhalla 15: The Scots tied their season high with 42 points in a first round victory.

(4) Hoover 48, (5) Monte Vista 41: Hoover quarterback Kristian Noriega threw for 400 yards and tossed four touchdown passes, connecting with Exavier Williams on three of them.

(3) El Cajon Valley 49, (6) Kearny 6: The Braves snapped a five-game winning streak, beating Kearny for the first time since 2016.

(2) Sweetwater 44, (7) Southwest El Centro 20: Sweetwater shutout Southwest in the second and fourth quarters, leading to a 24-point playoff win.

DIVISION 5-AA (Bracket)

(5) Maranatha Christian 35, (4) Rock Academy 14: After losing to the Rock 40-0 in October, the Eagles got redemption with a 21-point win on Friday. Their reward is a long trip to Holtville next Friday.

(3) Tri-City Christian 35, (6) Calipatria 6: Tri-City scored 21 points in the first quarter, putting the game out of reach early. A showdown against Army-Navy is up next.

DIVISION 6 (Bracket)

(4) Coastal Academy 48, (5) San Pasqual Academy 44: The Stingrays opened up the playoff bracket with a win over the Dragons for the second consecutive year. They'll play at top-seeded Foothills Christian on Friday.

(3) Calvin Christian 48, (6) San Diego Jewish Academy 6: The lone SDS game to be played on Thursday. The Crusaders had no issues taking down the Lions.
