10. #14 Murrieta Valley 56, Roosevelt (Eastvale) 27
Another week, another big win for Murrieta Valley.
The Nighthawks opened Big West League play with a 56-27 win against Roosevelt (Eastvale), led by an offensive combo platter featuring contributions from Bear Bachmeier, Dorian Hoze, Camden Connor, and Asa Chatman. While biggest story for Murrieta Valley might always be its offensive dominance, there's no doubt that they also have one of the most improved defenses in Southern California.
9. Yucaipa at Beaumont
In a particularly deep year for the Citrus Belt League, one of the conference's two unbeaten teams would have to pick up its first loss as third-ranked Beaumont and fourth-ranked Yucaipa ran into each other. It would be Beaumont that kept its unbeaten bid alive, and decisively, winning 39-14 behind a monster night in the air.
3-star quarterback Christopher Cooper – one of the state's most underrated gunslingers – completed 24 of 31 passes for 468 yards despite throwing a pair of interceptions, per IE Varsity's Eric-Paul Johnson. Cooper finished with three touchdown passes and had four receivers with 100 receiving yards. Next week, Beaumont takes to the road in an attempt to upset Citrus Valley and set up a Week Ten title match with Cajon.
8. Gardena 12, San Pedro 7
It wouldn't be a Friday night without one major upset, right? Gardena moved to 6-0 with a monumental upset of perennial Marine League and CIFLACS Open Division contender San Pedro, winning 12-7 thanks to a last-minute red zone stand.
7. #11 Mission Viejo 34, Kamehameha Kapalama (HI) 0
Back to its usual winning ways.
After a lopsided loss at Washington D.C. powerhouse St. John's last week, Mission Viejo rebounded with a 34-0 win at home against another out-of-state foe, Kamehameha Kapalama (HI). Whereas the Diablos allowed the first 33 points of the game last week before coming alive in the second half, this week they scored the first 34 – or in other words, all 34. Luke Fahey threw three touchdown passes, two coming to fellow sophomore Vance Spafford.
6. #3 St. John Bosco 42, #10 Santa Margarita 7
After taking a crushing loss to Kahuku (HI) last time out, St. John Bosco bounced back in a big way on Friday. In their first game in the continental USA since Sept. 8, the Braves defeated Santa Margarita 42-7 to record one of their best wins of the season.
Per Mike Huntley of OC Varsity, Chauncey "Boogie" Sylvester led St. John Bosco with three touchdowns, Cameron Jones ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries, and sophomore lineman Dutch Horisk recorded three sacks.
5. Edison (Huntington Beach) 21, Corona del Mar 7
Edison is still a top-two team in the Sunset League until further notice. Defense led the way in what'll likely go down to be the Chargers' biggest win of the regular season, a 21-7 win over Corona del Mar. The Chargers led 7-0 at halftime and went on to score the first touchdown of the second half as well.
4. #16 JSerra 24, #12 Orange Lutheran 14
Now that's what you call a Homecoming.
Last week, JSerra traveled roughly 300 miles north and fell 23-7 to lower-ranked Clovis North in a borderline-blowout. This week, the Lions returned home for Homecoming and pulled a light upset of their own, beating Orange Lutheran to move into third place in the Trinity League for the second season in a row. Despite the two-score differential, the game came down to the wire – OLu trailed 17-14 with possession of the ball and just over a minute left before throwing a game-ending pick-six.
3. #19 Damien 24, #24 Upland 21
Damien's magical season continues. The Spartans are now 7-0 after outlasting Upland 24-21 on a game-winning 26-yard field goal from Preston Yado. Senior running back Zachary Eguia broke out for a career-high 123 rushing yards to go with a touchdown to help lead the Spartans' offense.
2. Moorpark 35, Newbury Park 28
5-star quarterback Brady Smigiel and 3-star wide receiver Shane Rosenthal put on a show yet again for Newbury Park, but it wasn't enough. Moorpark came back from a 21-0 halftime deficit and 28-7 hole in the fourth quarter to stun Newbury Park 35-29, remain unbeaten, and move into first place in the Canyon League.
The turnaround started when Moorpark trimmed its deficit to 28-14 with 7:31 in the fourth quarter. The Musketeers followed it up with a fumble-recovery touchdown just over halfway through the quarter, and then recovered a fumble down 28-21 with 1:42 remaining. Not only did Moorpark score again with 28 seconds left and complete a two-point conversion to go up 29-28, but it even iced the game with a pick-six for emphasis.
1. #7 Carlsbad 35, Mission Hills 14
There's a lot of regular season football left, but Carlsbad just got one win closer to completing a 10-0 campaign – and cementing a five-year dynasty atop the Avocado League. After winning low-scoring defensive duels with Mission Hills in their last three meetings, the Lancers cruised to a 35-14 win.
