California high school football recruiting notebook: Mater Dei's Brandon Baker to announce college decision Sunday

Baker anchors the right side of the offensive line for the nation's top team

Mater Dei senior Brandon Baker, the nation's top offensive tackle prospect in the class of 2024 according to 247Sports, will announce his college decision on Sunday night.

Baker saw time at guard and tackle as a sophomore before taking over as the starting right tackle as a junior and senior.

Playing for the nation's top team, Baker helps pass block for Stanford commit Elijah Brown and run block for Georgia commit Nate Frazier.

Baker picked up more than 25 scholarship offers during his recruitment and has Florida State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon and Texas among his final five schools. He most recently took an official visit to Nebraska last weekend.

Top prospects visiting colleges during bye week

The sixth week of the high school football season in a California is a popular week for teams to have their bye week and several top prospects are taking advantage of their week off.

Carlsbad quarterback Julian Sayin has been committed to Alabama for nearly a year. The reigning MVP of the Elite 11 quarterback competition will return to Tuscaloosa during his bye week when the Crimson Tide host Ole Miss. Sayin has helped push Carlsbad to a 5-0 start this season while completing 79 percent of his passes. He's thrown 13 touchdown passes with zero interceptions and has scored twice more on the ground.

Jericho Johnson, a four-star defensive lineman in the class of 2024, has helped Armijo jump out to a 5-0 start in 2023. Johnson (6-4, 300) has 16 tackles, two sacks and two pass break ups so far. He'll use the team's bye week this upcoming weekend to visit Oregon. The Ducks are one four schools that Johnson is focused on, alongside Washington, USC, and Utah.

Joining Johnson in Oregon this weekend will be talented juniors Kaleb Edwards and Karson Cox. Edwards (6-6, 225), a tight end at Oak Ridge, has 17 catches for 310 yards and a touchdown so far this season in addition to four sacks and an interception on the defensive side. Cox has helped Oak Hills to a 4-1 start while averaging over 12 yards per carry. He has eight total touchdowns for the Bulldogs on the season.

San Juan Hills standout junior linebacker Weston Port will head to Michigan this weekend for the Wolverines game against Rutgers. Port and the Stallions don't have their bye this week but they will be playing on Thursday, allowing him to make it to the midwest in time for Saturday's game.
