Mark Serve out as football coach at Westlake High

Serve was 8-17 in his time as a head coach at Westlake.

Westlake High's Mark Serve is out as head football coach after being hired in 2021, school principal Jason Branham confirmed Monday afternoon.

Serve was hired in May of 2021 and took over for previous coach Tim Kirksey. In Serve's first year, Westlake went 5-5, but went just 2-8 with no Marmonte League wins (0-5) in 2022.

The Warriors lost to Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks 27-6 this past Thursday dropping to 1-4 on the season. Serve is dismissed with an overall record of 8-17 in his time at the helm at Westlake.

The interim coach for Westlake will be Ellis Green.

Serve served as an assistant coach at Sierra Canyon for 12 years, including the latter six years as the offensive coordinator before taking over at Westlake. Serve has a reputation for being a fiery, energetic coach that players like.

The news comes just weeks after the sudden death of Westlake football player Julius Poppinga, a junior lineman who passed in late August after asthma-related complications.
