Palos Verdes' Guy Gardner is SBLive's California Football Coach of the Week (9/14/23)

The Sea Kings moved to 3-0 with a win over Corona del Mar in Week Two, and are now 4-0

Palos Verdes football didn't need much time to establish itself as one of the top stories of the 2023 season.

Or to retake the title of being the best "Sea Kings" in the Southland for the first time in several years.

After starting the season with statement wins over St. Joseph (Santa Maria) and Sunrise Mountain (AZ), the Sea Kings knocked off Corona del Mar 14-11 on Aug. 31, achieving a 3-0 start for the first time since 2010. Defensive lineman Carson Moore was unstoppable for Palos Verdes with eight tackles, five TFLs, and three sacks in the victory.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak against CdM, and made it clear that the Sea Kings might be on the verge of their strongest season in recent program history.

For Palos Verdes' breakthrough win, fans voted head coach Guy Gardner as SBLive's California Football Coach of the Week for Aug. 31 - Sept. 2. Gardner won comfortably with 60.66-percent of the vote.

The Monday following the win against Corona del Mar, Palos Verdes debuted in SBLive's Southern Section top 25 for the first time. Later that week, the Sea Kings again upset another Sunset League powerhouse and became 4-0 with a 31-28 win against Edison (Huntington Beach). That moved the team to No. 22 in the section heading into Week Four. And they're doing it all with a freshman quarterback, Ryan Rakowski, as one of the team's focal points.

At the rate they're charging ahead, don't be surprised to see the Sea Kings go 10-0 in 2023. And don't be surprised if Gardner gets nominated for Coach of the Week again before long.
