Helix senior Carter Ross is SBLive's Southern California Football Athlete of the Week (8/26/2023)

The defensive back for one of state's top teams ties a state record with a 99-yard interception return for touchdown

Nobody has ever done better. Not with an interception return for touchdown. Not in California.

Carter Ross, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound senior defensive back for the Helix football team, returned an interception 99 yards in a 45-21 win at Saint Francis of Mountain View on Aug. 25.

He tied a state record (all returns out of the end zone are credited with 99 yards) with the return and it upped the Highlanders' record to 2-0. They are currently 3-0 and ranked No. 22 in California

That return put Ross' name in a top performer's list when his numbers really skyrocketed. He piled up more than 4,000 votes and 51 percent of the vote to earn the SBLive Southern California Football Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 24-26.
