Kennedy senior Alonzo Munoz is SBLive's Southern California Athlete of the Week (May 22-27)

Standout pitcher hurls a complete game gem in LA City Section semifinals

Alonzo Munoz knows how to close. Even when he starts. 

The senior pitcher for Kennedy-Granada Hills pitched a complete game seven-hitter with four strikeouts and two weeks in a 2-0 LA City Section semifinal baseball win over Poly. 

Munoz finished the season 7-2 with a 2.29 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 26 walks in 58 innings pitched. 

For his efforts against Poly, Munoz earned a spot on an SBLive performance list, which vaulted him into the running for athlete of the week. 

Munoz piled up more than 8,000 votes and 55.6 percent of the vote to win the SBLive Southern California High School Athlete of the Week Award for May 22-27, presented by Jersey Mike's Subs.

Julio Ojeda, Lincoln baseball: Ojeda hit a grand slam in Saturday's 7-4 win over St. Joseph Academy for the San Diego Section Division 5 title.

Destin Allen-Fox, Santana baseball: Allen-Fox struck out three batters during Friday's complete game shutout in the San Diego Section Division 1 championship game.

Tyler Allegro, Fallbrook baseball: Allegro struck out eight batters and allowed one run over five innings in Saturday's 2-1 win over Maranatha Christian.

Leo Veliz, Calexico baseball: Veliz went 2-5 with a double and two runs batted in during Saturday's win over Bishop's.

Carson Reese, Del Norte baseball: Reese tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 10 batters in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Sage Creek.

Jack Giordano, Patrick Henry baseball: Giordano had two doubles and drove in a run during Tuesday's 4-0 win over Poway.

Talin Gardini, Patrick Henry baseball: Gardini struck out eight batters over six shutout innings and hit a home run in Wednesday's semifinal win over Poway.

Daniel Mora, Eastlake baseball: Mora had four hits, four runs and four stolen bases in Tuesday's 9-5 win over Rancho Bernardo.

Tanyon Smith, Fallbrook baseball: Smith struck out seven batters during Tuesday's 3-0 shutout against Vista.

Porter Rovin, Sage Creek baseball: Rovin struck out seven batters during Wednesday's 6-0 win against Del Norte that sent the Bobcats to the section championship game.

Alex Martinez, Sylmar baseball: Martinez struck out six batters in Tuesday's complete game shutout against San Pedro.

Alexis Huey, Poway softball: Huey hit a walk-off infield single in Saturday's eight inning win over Rancho Bernardo in the San Diego Section Open Division championship game.

Nat Lozano, Otay Ranch softball: Lozano had a home run, a walk, and drove in two runs during Friday's Division 1 championship victory against Mater Dei Catholic.

Kalli Strahm, Holtville softball: Strahm had two hits and two runs batted in and also pitched a complete game, allowing one run in Friday's 7-1 win over Santana.

Jayden Rutledge, Imperial softball: Rutledge had two hits including a double and also pitched seven innings in Saturday's 3-2 win over Christian.

Sierra Minshew, Madison softball: Minshew pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters in Saturday's championship victory against Palo Verde Valley.

Cayla Contreras, Coastal Academy softball: Contreras had four hits including two doubles and drove in five runs during Saturday's 12-2 win over Liberty Charter.
