SBLive’s California Baseball Top 25: Corona moves to No. 4 after beating Notre Dame

Corona reached the semifinal round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs with a 2-1 win over Notre Dame on Friday.

The Corona Panthers caught many by surprise on Friday, taking down California's previously top-ranked team, Notre Dame. The Panthers delivered an RBI double in the 10th inning to take down the Knights, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

The Knights will get another chance at one of California's best teams when they host JSerra in the semifinal round on Tuesday afternoon.

1. JSerra (22-9)

JSerra has heated up, winning 11 of their past 12 games as they enter Tuesday's CIF Southern Section semifinal game. Rain caused the Lions to delay their first round game to last Monday, resulting in three playoff games in five days.

2. Aquinas (22-4)

Aquinas has won 19 of their past 21 games, losing only to Orange Lutheran and Huntington Beach during that stretch. They'll take on Crespi on Tuesday with the winner advancing to this weekend's Southern Section championship game.

3. Santa Margarita (25-6)

Santa Margarita has won 10 of their past 11 games heading into Tuesday's Southern Section Division 1 semifinal game against Orange Lutheran. The Eagles La Mirada in Friday's quarterfinal round before scoring eight runs in the sixth inning to advance.

4. Corona (22-9)

Corona needed to extra-inning games last week to get past San Dimas and California's top-ranked team at the time, Notre Dame. They'll host JSerra on Tuesday with a trip to the Southern Section Championship game on the line.

5. Orange Lutheran (20-10-1)

Orange Lutheran held off Harvard-Westlake 1-0 on Tuesday and beat Villa Park 6-1 to earn a semifinal game against Santa Margarita. The Lancers were swept by Santa Margarita during their Trinity League series in March.

6. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) (26-2)

Notre Dame saw their season come to a shocking end with a 2-1 loss at Corona in 10 innings on Friday. The Knights had won 21 of their previous 22 games before losing in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

7. Cardinal Newman (21-0)

Cardinal Newman won their league tournament last week, beating Windsor for the second time in a week after the Jaguars ended Cardinal Newman's perfect season earlier in the month. They have a first-round bye in the North Coast Section Division 3 playoffs and will await the winner of St. Mary's and Montgomery.

8. Valley Christian (San Jose) (26-3)

The Warriors have won 14 straight games and completed the West Catholic League undefeated. Their playoff bracket will be released on Monday afternoon.

9. La Costa Canyon (20-6)

La Costa Canyon captured the North County Coastal League title despite dropping their final game of the regular season to San Marcos. The Mavericks are the top-seed in the San Diego Section Open Division playoffs and will host St. Augustine on Wednesday.

10. De La Salle (20-5)

De La Salle dropped their final regular season game against Granada, 6-0. They'll open the North Coast Section playoffs as the top-seed by hosting Castro Valley on Tuesday.

11. Crespi (19-7-3)

Crespi has scored 22 runs through their first three playoff games. They'll take on Aquinas on Tuesday in the Southern Section Division 2 semifinal round.

12. Franklin (Elk Grove) (26-4)

Franklin has won 12 straight games and shutout Stagg and Oak Ridge in the first two rounds of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. They'll begin a best of three series with Lincoln on Monday.

13. Whitney (24-6)

Whitney is the two-seed in the Sac-Joaquin Division 1 playoffs. They'll start a best of three series with Stockton St. Mary's on Monday afternoon.

14. Archbishop Mitty (20-7)

Mitty dropped their final two games of the season, both coming against Valley Christian. Their playoff pairings will be released on Monday afternoon.

15. Eastlake (24-3)

Eastlake went 3-0 last week, beating Montgomery by two games for the Mesa League title. The Titans are the three-seed in the San Diego Open Division playoffs and will host Granite Hills in arguably the top first-round game.

16. South Hills (23-6)

South Hills has allowed four total runs during their current six-game winning streak. They'll host Calabasas on Tuesday in the semifinal round of the Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

17. Rancho Bernardo (19-7)

Rancho Bernardo closed out the regular season by beating Torrey Pines and Westview, tying with the Falcons for second place in the North County Coastal League. They'll host La Jolla Country Day in the first round of the San Diego Section Open Division playoffs.

18. Bullard (Fresno) (23-3)

Bullard is on a 21-game winning streak and has not lost since February 25. The Knights are the one-seed in the Central Section Division 1 bracket and will open against Hanford on Wednesday.

19. St. Mary's (Stockton) (23-6)

The Rams zoomed past Laguna Creek and Folsom in the first two rounds of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. They'll play a best of three series with Whitney in the semifinal round.

20. La Mirada (22-8)

The Matadores led Santa Margarita 4-1 on Friday before surrendering eight runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 9-4 loss. La Mirada finished the season with a 1.57 ERA as a team, tossing two no-hitters.

21. Harvard-Westlake (18-7)

The Wolverines played two tight playoff games, beating Palos Verdes 1-0 in 14 innings before falling to Orange Lutheran 1-0 on Friday night.

22. Villa Park (20-11)

Villa Park got past Damien and Huntington Beach in the first two rounds of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs before falling to Orange Lutheran on Friday night. Senior left-handed pitcher Brandon Luu finished the season with a 1.24 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 62 innings.

23. Huntington Beach (21-9)

Huntington Beach fell to Villa Park in the second round of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

24. Torrey Pines (18-7)

Torrey Pines dropped their lone game in the final week of the regular season to Rancho Bernardo. The Falcons are the four-seed in the San Diego Section Open Division playoffs and will begin the double-elimination bracket against Carlsbad on Wednesday.

25. Clayton Valley Charter (19-5)

Clayton Valley Charter took both games from Benicia last week to capture the Diablo-Foothill League. They are the two-seed in the North Coast Division 1 playoffs and will host College Park on Tuesday.
